Anke Greifeneder: Transforming German TV & Finding Local HBO Hits!

Deadline’s German TV Disruptor Anke Greifeneder Wants To “Challenge The Status Quo” & Find Local Hits For HBO

Exclusive Insight

EXCLUSIVE: “My aim is always to create content that becomes a topic of conversation.”

Anke Greifeneder, the head of HBO Max Germany, has effectively utilized this philosophy throughout her notable career. She has been instrumental in introducing American networks and streaming services to the German market, focusing on creating original German content and assembling top-tier teams.

Currently, her goal is to greenlight a fresh slate of local HBO productions, scouting for new and influential German voices akin to Lena Dunham or Richard Gadd. For more insights, view her complete discussion at the Seriencamp, hosted by Deadline.

Champion of Innovation

During the Seriencamp opening ceremony in Cologne last night, Greifeneder was honored with the 2026 Deadline German TV Disruptor Award. With a portfolio that includes diverse projects from 4 Blocks to Arthur’s Law, and as varied as MTV’s Pimp my Bicycle, she defines disruption as challenging conventional approaches.

“Innovation involves shaking up the norm and rethinking established methods,” Greifeneder explained. She avoids following trends, preferring instead to pioneer new ways to explore genres.

Greifeneder frequently discusses the concept of being “counter cyclical” and openly addresses the challenges this approach brings in Germany. She quotes German actor Ken Duken: “Americans produce films with money, Brits with bravery, and Germans with caution.” She uses this perspective to emphasize the cultural tendency towards security in Germany but asserts that in her professional decisions, she is guided by conviction rather than fear.

With a background in global and international settings, Greifeneder’s experiences have equipped her with a unique perspective on storytelling and cultural engagement, enabling a deeper understanding of the German narrative landscape.

Now overseeing the production of local original content for HBO Max in German-speaking Europe and France, Greifeneder is excited about tapping into the region’s rich pool of talent. “While HBO is known for its outstanding U.S. shows, we feel there’s a gap for local stories,” she states, emphasizing the meticulous development process that defines HBO’s brand.

Leading the charge on originals

Greifeneder expresses admiration for HBO executives like Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, describing the network’s programming as “extraordinary.” She highlights the diverse appeal of HBO, from fans of The Wire, Game of Thrones, to classics like Sex and the City, praising the network’s innovative approach to genre.

Her team is currently developing several local shows, including a prequel to 4 Blocks, a thriller by the creators of Dark, and a documentary on the notorious Big Maple Leaf gold coin heist in Berlin.

The prequel, titled 4 Blocks Zero, focuses on the origins of the Nassery clan in the 1990s post-Berlin Wall era. “We aim to explore compelling themes without dwelling on the past,” Greifeneder explains, delving into the socio-political dynamics of the time.

The German Lena Dunham

Looking ahead, Greifeneder is not confining her search to any specific genre. She is on the lookout for the next big German storytellers, hoping to capture the contemporary zeitgeist in a manner similar to Lena Dunham’s Girls or Richard Gadd’s Half Man.

Her extensive career with major American brands like MTV, TNT, and Cartoon Network has prepared her well for her current role. Interestingly, Greifeneder, who grew up in a home without television, began her career as a novelist, later transitioning to television where she found her passion for storytelling.

After her stint at MTV, she played a critical role in establishing TNT in Germany, appreciating the startup-like spirit within a larger corporate structure. “It was exhilarating to introduce TNT’s dynamic brand to Germany,” she recalls.

Now, with responsibilities in France added to her portfolio, Greifeneder is excited about the future and remains committed to her role as a disruptor. “I’m honored by the disruptor award; it resonates with my approach to challenge and redefine norms,” she concludes.

The Seriencamp festival runs from June 9 to 11, promising a platform for groundbreaking discussions and innovations in television.
