Changes in the Upcoming Asian Film Awards Ceremony
The Asian Film Awards Academy has announced alterations to the upcoming Asian Film Awards ceremony, in line with the recommendations from the Hong Kong government for maintaining a subdued profile for public events. This decision comes in the wake of a tragic apartment fire that occurred last year.
The ceremony scheduled for 2026 will forego the traditional red carpet and competitive categories. Instead, the event will focus on presenting special awards in a respectful and understated manner, aiming to honor the exceptional achievements of individuals within the film industry.
Dr. Wilfred Wong, the Chairman of the Asian Film Awards Academy, expressed his views on the changes, stating, “This decision was made with careful consideration. Given the current circumstances, we find that a solemn and simple presentation of the awards is most suitable. We aim to show our respect for the community by celebrating achievements in a modest way.”
The devastating fire that influenced these changes claimed the lives of 161 people. It occurred in a residential area in Tai Po, located in the northern New Territories of Hong Kong. The fire reportedly started on the external scaffolding of an apartment building, which was under renovation, and rapidly spread to most of the buildings within the complex, which were clad in bamboo scaffolding and covered with green netting.
Following the catastrophe, several public events in Hong Kong have been either canceled or significantly modified. Notable changes included the cancellation of the Hong Kong premiere of Zootopia by Disney, and the absence of the traditional New Year’s fireworks.
As of now, the exact date for the 2026 Asian Film Awards has not been determined.
