Avatar Sequel Shatters Records: Disney Approaches $6B Mark with Fire & Ash’s Massive Opening!

Avatar Box Office Update Reveals Fire & Ash Opened Even Higher As Disney Nears $6B Worldwide

Avatar: Fire and Ash has debuted with better-than-expected figures, propelling Disney towards the impressive milestone of $6 billion in global earnings.

According to Deadline, the latest cinematic venture by James Cameron, a science fiction fantasy sequel, saw a robust domestic debut of $89 million, with Sunday’s earnings alone reaching $24.5 million—surpassing Disney’s projection by $1.5 million. Globally, Fire and Ash garnered $347 million during its opening, slightly above the $345 million initially reported.

The recent Avatar installment experienced a 13% drop in revenue from Saturday to Sunday, an improvement over the 18% drop seen by its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water, in 2022. Nevertheless, both the domestic and worldwide opening figures for The Way of Water were higher, at $134 million and $435 million, respectively.

With the inclusion of Fire and Ash‘s opening weekend and the $1.27 billion generated by Zootopia 2 (2025), among other films, Disney is poised to hit the $6 billion global revenue mark by Saturday, December 27. Warner Bros. remains in pursuit with $4.37 billion.

While Avatar: Fire and Ash has received more tepid reviews from critics compared to its two predecessors, the audience reception has been positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, the audience approval rating stands strong at 91%, significantly higher than the 67% given by critics.

The narrative continues from the poignant conclusion of Avatar: The Way of Water, focusing on Jake (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the Sully family as they cope with the loss of Neteyam (Jamie Flatters). In Fire and Ash, the family faces fresh threats from the RDA and a new antagonistic Na’vi group known as the Ash People.

The original 2009 Avatar film remains the top-grossing movie ever with a worldwide total of $2.923 billion. The Way of Water also enjoyed huge success, earning $2.343 billion and ranking as the third highest-grossing film of all time. However, Fire and Ash is not anticipated to perform as robustly as its predecessor, and the opening weekend numbers reflect this.

The ultimate performance of Fire and Ash is still uncertain. A significant factor in the success of the prior Avatar films has been their sustained popularity in cinemas. These films are considered must-see experiences for many, who often choose to view them in 3D and premium large formats, and benefit from repeated viewings.

Given its substantial $400 million budget, Fire and Ash may need to gross over $1 billion to break even. It’s likely that the film will achieve this mark, but how Cameron and Disney define “success” for this sequel might differ, especially considering the phenomenal success of earlier films.
