Avengers Star Spills on 7-Year Doomsday Countdown: Urges Fans to ‘Just Have Fun’

Avengers Star Gets Candid About The 7-Year Doomsday Build-Up: "Just Go Have Fun”

A cast member from Avengers: Doomsday has advised fans to temper their expectations for the much-awaited film.

The curtain rises this December on The Multiverse Saga’s climactic phase with the release of the fifth Avengers film. The film not only brings back the beloved Avengers but also includes appearances from The Fantastic Four, X-Men, and the New Avengers. Among the latter is Wyatt Russell’s character, John Walker, also known as U.S. Agent. Russell hopes that audiences will view the upcoming Marvel film primarily as a source of entertainment.

During a ScreenRant interview with Liam Crowley at the Disclosure Day red carpet event, Russell, who also features in a new Steven Spielberg film, expressed his satisfaction with the parts of Avengers: Doomsday he has seen, noting he had “a legitimate amount of fun” working with fellow cast members. He shared his wishes for how fans should approach the film:

I hope that people can go to see that movie and just throw away these predispositions from talking about it online. Seven years of buildup is a long time. And like, just go have fun, dude. I know you’ve been talking to the same guy online for 10 years about what’s wrong about this character or what’s bad about that. Just go enjoy it and forget about the nine years of talking about it. It’s really not the way a movie’s supposed to be enjoyed, and you’re just setting yourself up for failure if you do it that way.

Russell also recognized the high level of anticipation for Avengers: Doomsday, but he remains optimistic that “people can go enjoy it for what it is and just leave it at that.” Doomsday marks the first Avengers movie since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which capped off The Infinity Saga. It is one of only three MCU films with confirmed release dates, nestled between Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31 and Avengers: Secret Wars, which will conclude The Multiverse Saga, on December 17, 2027.

Avengers: Doomsday is Russell’s third appearance in the MCU. His portrayal of Walker was first seen in the Disney+ miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where he briefly replaced Steve Rogers as Captain America before being demoted and discharged from the U.S. Army. He then adopted the U.S. Agent persona and teamed up with Yelena Belova/Black Widow, Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Ava Starr/Ghost, and Bob Reynolds/Sentry in Thunderbolts*.

The conclusion of Thunderbolts* set the stage for these characters to form the New Avengers. A post-credits scene, set 14 months later, revealed that this new team was sued by Sam Wilson/Captain America, leader of the original Avengers, for trademark infringement. Additionally, Walker and his team encountered issues in outer space, which escalated with the arrival of an extradimensional ship marked with a “4” symbol, hinting at The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

With the release of Avengers: Doomsday just six months away, details about the plot are still largely under wraps. However, it is known that the superhero teams will face off against Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. Initially, the film was titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and was set to feature Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror. This was later changed following Majors’ legal issues, although Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige mentioned in July 2025 that dropping the Kang storyline had been considered even before these developments.

Avengers: Doomsday returns to “Phase Zero” on December 18, the same day Dune: Part Three hits theaters. Russell stars alongside Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, and others in Disclosure Day, which opens this Friday, June 12.
