Amol Rajan Departs from BBC’s Today Program to Start New Venture

Amol Rajan, a prominent figure at the BBC, has announced his departure from the Today program after a four-year stint. He is on his way to establish his own business.

While Rajan is stepping down from the morning show, he will not be leaving the BBC entirely. He will continue to host University Challenge and the Radical with Amol Rajan podcast. He expressed enthusiasm about his new entrepreneurial venture, citing a long-held aspiration to delve into the burgeoning digital creator economy.

“I’ve toyed with the idea of starting my own company for two decades, and I’m thrilled to finally make that leap into what I call the Great Digital Narnia of the Creator Economy,” Rajan remarked. He reassured fans that he would remain the face of “Britain’s oldest TV quiz and the most exciting podcast.”

Rajan also shared a personal inspiration behind his decision, referencing a popular television character: “Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses was my childhood hero, and now it seems right to tap into my entrepreneurial spirit.”

Rajan has been a familiar voice on Radio 4’s morning show for the past four years. The BBC will announce his successor on the program in the near future.

Prior to his role on the Today program, Rajan joined the BBC as its inaugural media editor ten years ago. He began hosting University Challenge in 2023, alongside managing an interview series and his podcast for the network.

High Praise for Rajan’s Contributions

Owenna Griffiths, the editor of Today, praised Rajan for his unique traits and contributions to the program. “Amol is a rare talent who combines intellectual agility, a wide range of interests, and a wonderful sense of humor,” Griffiths said. She emphasized his collaborative spirit and his support for the production team, stating, “He’s a tremendous team player who consistently recognizes the efforts of our producers. Working with him on Today and setting up Radical has been a delightful experience. He will be greatly missed.”
