Godzilla vs. Kong actress Kaylee Hottle has passed away at the young age of 18.
Kaylee Hottle, a deaf actress, was born into a family with a deep history of deafness spanning four generations. Her career in the entertainment sector began with roles in advertisements, notably for Glide, a video messaging app popular among the deaf community.
Hottle tragically lost her life in a car accident in Maryland on a Tuesday morning, as reported by TMZ after speaking with her father, Joshua Hottle. He shared the heartbreaking news through a Facebook live video titled “I am taking a flight that I would never like to take,” in which he disclosed that he was traveling from Texas to Maryland to identify his daughter’s body and take charge of her remains.
Joshua Hottle revealed that he was initially informed his daughter was critically injured in the accident and was being rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, she died during the transport.
Breakthrough Role in Godzilla vs. Kong
In her first major film role, Kaylee Hottle portrayed Jia, a deaf orphan who communicates with Kong using American Sign Language, in Godzilla vs. Kong. Throughout the film, she plays a crucial role in convincing Kong to aid Godzilla. Jia’s adoptive mother, Dr. Ilene Andrews, is portrayed by Rebecca Hall.
The film, released in theaters and on HBO Max in March 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was well-received, earning a 75% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing $470 million globally. Hottle starred alongside a stellar cast including Alexander Skarsgård, Millie Bobby Brown, Brian Tyree Henry, and others under the direction of Adam Wingard.
Later in 2021, Hottle made a guest appearance in an episode of Magnum P.I. Season 4 as Joon. She also reprised her role as Jia in the sequel Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire slated for release in 2024, which also featured returns from cast members Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry and was directed by Wingard.
The sequel outperformed its predecessor, grossing $572 million. Hottle’s portrayal of Jia in The New Empire earned her a Saturn Award nomination for Best Performance by a Younger Actor in a Film.
Following her roles in Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, Hottle had been cast in a new film titled What Doesn’t Kill Us, which is currently in pre-production, with Anna Campbell and Andy Mingo as writers.
