A star from the popular series Bridgerton is set to both lead and produce a fresh version of the classic narrative The Count of Monte Cristo. Originally penned by Alexandre Dumas in 1845, this iconic novel tells the story of a young sailor wrongfully imprisoned for treason. After escaping, he seeks vengeance on those who wronged him, using his new identity as the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo. Over the years, this tale has seen numerous screen adaptations, with the most recent being in 2024.

A new cinematic rendition is now being developed, with the Bridgerton actor at the forefront. As reported by Deadline, Regé-Jean Page is on board to star in and produce the upcoming Count of Monte Cristo film produced by Department M. The screenplay will be penned by Patrick Ness, known for Chaos Walking. Page will collaborate in production with his partner Emily Brown under their Mighty Stranger banner, alongside Mike Larocca and Michael Schaefer. Page expressed his enthusiasm, stating:

We are driven by a passion for bold and adventurous storytelling with heart, which is at the core of everything we create. With the help of amazing collaborators, Mighty Stranger is curating a collection of projects led by creative vision that expands cultural perspectives through engaging entertainment. This is why we are thrilled to present The Count Of Monte Cristo to a worldwide audience, exploring new depths in Dumas’ creation that have yet to be revealed.

Implications of The Count Of Monte Cristo Movie for Regé-Jean Page

Bridgerton Actor Secures a Major Role

Regé-Jean Page first gained significant attention for his role as the charming Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset, in the first season of Bridgerton, which earned him an Emmy nomination. He departed the series after one season, using his elevated profile to transition into movie roles. His first film role was as a CIA official, Denny Carmichael, in Netflix’s action-thriller The Gray Man, which, despite critical reviews, performed well on the platform.

Page also appeared in the high-budget fantasy film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which received positive critical reception but did not meet box office expectations, earning $208 million. Recently, he played Col. James Stokes in Steven Soderbergh’s espionage thriller Black Bag, which, despite excellent reviews, also underperformed at the box office, grossing $14 million against its $60 million budget at the time of reporting.

Our Perspective on Regé-Jean Page Leading The Count Of Monte Cristo Movie

The Challenge of Reestablishing Himself as a Leading Man

In season 1 of Bridgerton, Regé-Jean Page demonstrated he could carry a series as a leading man with magnetic charm. However, in the years since, his roles have been largely supportive. While he has maintained a steady presence in films like The Gray Man, Dungeons & Dragons, and Black Bag, a leading role has eluded him since Bridgerton. The upcoming The Count of Monte Cristo film provides an opportunity for Page to revisit a leading position. To stand out, the film will need to differentiate itself from the many adaptations that have come before it.
