The much-awaited The Devil Wears Prada 2 hasn’t hit the big screens yet, but the cast is already contemplating the prospects of a third installment.
In a discussion with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley, newcomers Simone Ashley, Caleb Hearon, and Helen J. Shen, portraying Amari Mari, Charlie, and Jin Chao respectively, entertained the thought of coming back for another sequel.
Hearon humorously remarked that a third movie might be a long way off, possibly not until 2046, referencing the two decades it took to produce The Devil Wears Prada 2 after the original. However, Ashley confidently refuted, “it’s not going to take 20 years.”
Caleb Hearon: “Oh, my gosh. In 2046…”
Simone Ashley: “It’s not going to take 20 years! It’s not.”
Regarding potential plots for Devil Wears Prada 3, Hearon expressed his wish for a reunion of his character with Ashley’s and Shen’s characters. “I hope we run Runway or something together,” he mentioned. “It’d be fun.” Shen fully supports the idea of Ashley’s character, Amari, taking the lead. Ashley sees such a development as “inevitable.”
Caleb Hearon: “I don’t know, but I hope it’s the three of us doing something together. I hope we run Runway or something together. It’d be fun.”
Helen J. Shen [when asked if Amari should be put in charge]: “Yes, come on.”
Simone Ashley: “It’s inevitable. Let’s see what happens.”
Shen emphasized that regardless of the storyline, she relishes the opportunity to “hang out on set” with her co-stars, as she has greatly enjoyed promoting The Devil Wears Prada 2 with them.
Helen J. Shen: “I’ve been having such a great time doing all of this with you guys. All I want to do is hang out on set. So, wherever we are, I’ll be there.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 brings back Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, reuniting them two decades after their roles in the first film, which became a cultural icon and gave rise to memorable lines like “Gird your loins,” “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking,” “You have no style or sense of fashion,” and “That’s all.”
The original The Devil Wears Prada, based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name, was a box office success, grossing $326 million on a $35 million budget. It also received acclaim from critics, holding a Certified Fresh rating of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes.
20th Century Studios is about to release The Devil Wears Prada 2, featuring an expanded cast including Justin Theroux, Kenneth Branagh, Tracie Thoms, Lucy Liu, Patrick Brammall, Pauline Chalamet, B.J. Novak, Rachel Bloom, and Lady Gaga.
In the original film, Hathaway’s character, Andy Sachs, secured a new job after enduring the high demands and sharp critiques of her boss, Miranda Priestly, who was inspired by Anna Wintour, then Vogue’s editor-in-chief. Streep has disclosed that her portrayal was influenced by Mike Nichols and Clint Eastwood.
Years later, the characters find themselves navigating a transformed media landscape, where Runway is struggling to adapt to the digital and social media age. However, Blunt’s character, Emily Charlton, could be pivotal in revitalizing the magazine. The sequel is anticipated to have a significant opening weekend, potentially paving the way for a third film.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is set for a theater release on Friday, May 1, 2026.
