Timothée Chalamet teases a “more intense” portrayal of Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Three and sheds light on his future involvement in the series.
Chalamet initially took on the role of Paul in Dune, which covered the first half of Frank Herbert’s iconic sci-fi novel. He continued his role in Dune: Part Two, which depicted the latter half of the book. He’s set to return in Dune: Part Three, an adaptation of Herbert’s sequel, Dune Messiah. This next chapter is directed by Denis Villeneuve and is scheduled for a theatrical release on December 18.
During a town hall hosted by Variety and CNN at the University of Texas, Chalamet spoke about Dune: Part Three being his final appearance in the franchise, which he says inspired a more profound performance. He expressed a deep reverence for the filming process, treating each moment as precious and pivotal to his character’s evolution. Below are Chalamet’s insights:
I didn’t want to take any moment for granted. Every scene was treated as sacred, especially since this was my final ‘Dune’ film. This awareness prevented any complacency on my part, and I felt compelled to amplify the intensity even more than before. It seemed like the natural direction for my character, so I pushed as hard as I could.
Dune: Part Two concluded with Paul ascending to Emperor and initiating a Holy War among the Great Houses. Dune: Part Three picks up about 12 years later, yet the gravity of Paul’s actions and the ongoing war have only deepened, making this installment, as Chalamet puts it, “the eeriest one. It’s a big swing.”
While Chalamet refrains from revealing too much about the conclusion of Paul’s story in Dune: Part Three, his comments confirm that this will be his last film in the series. Villeneuve has also indicated that this will be his final directorial effort in the trilogy, although he is open to the possibility of other filmmakers continuing the saga. The Dune universe includes additional novels by Herbert and subsequent works by other authors, offering plenty of material for future adaptations.
Apart from his role as Paul, Chalamet’s recent performances have placed him in the spotlight for the Oscar race for Best Actor, following his Golden Globe win for his role in Marty Supreme. His acclaimed portrayal of Marty Mauser in the A24 film has been noted for its intensity, a stark contrast to his character in Dune.
With the success of the earlier films, excitement for Dune: Part Three was already considerable. However, anticipation has skyrocketed with news of its release coinciding with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers: Doomsday. The simultaneous release of these two major films has led to the day being dubbed “Dunesday,” with Chalamet’s confirmation of his final portrayal of Paul adding to the fervor.
