Caution: Spoilers for Twinless ahead.Twinless centers on the story of two individuals, Dennis and Roman, who connect through the shared trauma of losing their twin brothers. However, the plot takes a twist as Dennis, portrayed by James Sweeney (who also directed and wrote the film), fabricates having a deceased twin to grow closer to Roman, played by Dylan O’Brien, after developing feelings for Roman’s late twin, whom he had seen die.
Dennis conceals this lie throughout most of the movie, but when the truth is revealed, it shatters the deep bond he had formed with Roman. The film concludes with a poignant scene where Dennis and Roman possibly meet for the last time following the confession.
In discussions with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant, James Sweeney, Dylan O’Brien, and Lauren Graham shared insights into the film’s conclusion. Their thoughts are captured below:
ScreenRant: Before we conclude, I have a spoiler-heavy question, if that’s okay? We’ll discuss it post-release. Regarding the scene in the diner at the end, where Dennis and Roman seemingly reconnect, I have my interpretation of why Roman reached out initially. I’m curious to know, do you see this as a moment of closure for them, or the beginning of a new phase in their relationship?
James Sweeney: Well, I might disappoint you with a non-dramatic response, but I believe that part of what we explored in this film, and perhaps what art does in general, is to present something then step back to let the audience form their own opinions. Personally, I have my view, but I’m more interested in what the viewers think. What’s your take?
ScreenRant: I’d like to hear Dylan’s thoughts first, actually.
Dylan O’Brien: It’s tricky deciding whether to keep this close or share it. I view the ending with a sense of hope—not just hope, really. I see healing in that diner scene. You notice the details, like how initially he doesn’t eat the sandwich and then he does. It’s a sign of barriers breaking down. I’ve always felt that way, and perhaps it reflects my views on forgiveness. I believe they get past this eventually. Roman understands Dennis’s intentions. They had such a unique bond, I don’t see it ending abruptly. It’s more like a testament to Roman’s growth that he can now forgive, whereas before, he might have written Dennis off completely.
ScreenRant: Finally, Lauren, coming back to you with a complete spoiler question. After Roman discovers the whole truth about Dennis’s manipulative actions towards him and his family, do you think he would share that revelation with Lisa? Is their relationship at a stage where he would share everything?
Lauren Graham: Absolutely, I think in a hypothetical Twinless 2, that could be a significant part of their journey towards healing.
Dylan O’Brien’s Perspective on the Film’s Conclusion
Dylan O’Brien seemed reluctant to disclose his view on the film’s ending, aligning somewhat with Sweeney’s preference for leaving it to the audience to interpret. Nonetheless, his optimistic outlook supports any viewer who felt a sense of resolution in Twinless’ final moments.
The idea that Roman and Dennis could remain in each other’s lives seems significant, especially considering the betrayal that could have easily ended their friendship. O’Brien’s belief that Roman would not simply “discard” their relationship indicates his confidence in Roman’s evolved character—a reflection of the depth O’Brien brought to his role.
This complexity contributed to Twinless being highlighted as one of the standout films at the Sundance Film Festival 2025.
Reflecting on the Ending of Twinless
O’Brien’s comments highlight the elegance of Twinless’s ending. While the film’s director embraces its ambiguity, O’Brien’s interpretation offers a hopeful and fulfilling perspective.
Imagining a future where Roman and Dennis rebuild their relationship is comforting. As O’Brien mentioned, it would mark significant personal growth for Roman and would validate Dennis’s decision to come clean.
Lauren Graham’s remarks suggest that while Twinless stands well on its own, a sequel exploring the characters’ continued healing could be just as compelling, especially if it maintains the emotional and comedic balance of the original.
Given ScreenRant’s review praising Twinless as an unexpectedly touching and humorously awkward film showcasing Dylan O’Brien at his finest, a continuation would likely be warmly received.
