Approximately two weeks after its theatrical release, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is set for an early home release.
The horror follow-up produced by Blumhouse will be available on digital platforms starting tonight at midnight, following a successful theatrical run. This sequel to Five Nights at Freddy’s, inspired by the video game series of the same name, faced tough reviews and garnered only a 16% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Directed by Emma Tammi, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 managed to perform well financially, earning over $200 million globally, including more than $108 million domestically. The film, released in 2023, accumulated over $297 million worldwide, making it a significant horror release for the year.
In Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, we follow Abby (played by Piper Rubio) one year after the events of the first movie, as she and her friends, who are animatronics, delve into the history of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The plot thickens as described in the official summary:
“Ex-security guard Mike (Hutcherson) and officer Vanessa (Lail) have concealed the truth from Mike’s younger sister, Abby (Rubio), about the fate of her animatronic companions. However, when Abby secretly visits Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy, she triggers a chain of terrifying events that uncover sinister secrets about Freddy’s origins and awaken a long-dormant horror.”
The film features a cast including Josh Hutcherson (Hunger Games), Megan Fox (Transformers), Elizabeth Lail (You), and Mckenna Grace (Regretting You). Additionally, horror veterans Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich, known for their roles in Scream, come together again for this sequel.
Despite a low critical reception of 16% on Rotten Tomatoes, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has been highly rated by audiences, receiving an 85% approval rating. Fans have praised the film as “visually stunning” and “captivating“, although critics have been less favorable, criticizing it as inferior to its predecessor and “uninspiring“. This discrepancy has marked a record-breaking difference between critic and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will be streamed digitally via Prime Video.
