The development of the DC Universe has not met with universal approval.
As DC Studios progresses with the first chapter of the DCU, titled “Gods and Monsters,” the franchise is expanding its presence on both cinema and television screens. Despite the gradual progress towards a new-generation Justice League, some critiques have been directed towards James Gunn‘s approach.
In a recent episode of the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Gal Gadot opened up about her experiences with the development of Wonder Woman 3. She revealed that she was initially assured of the sequel’s production and her continuing role as Diana Prince. However, Gadot expressed disappointment with the overall management, mentioning, “They initially promised to develop it with me. Yet, I observed how they managed everything else – the handling of Henry’s situation was far from smooth, and Patty’s situation was similarly mishandled.”
Gadot, who first appeared in the DCEU with 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, shared her mature outlook on the situation: “We’re all adults here, it’s fine. It’s not about them, it’s about their belief in their work, which is all good. I’m just thankful for the opportunity to have played this role, which was so celebrated at that time.”
The decision to reboot the Wonder Woman franchise came after a series of changes at DC Studios, which included plans to reintroduce Henry Cavill before ultimately deciding on a new direction and lead for Superman. This was a misunderstanding, as Cavill was never formally dismissed by Gunn since he wasn’t under contract at that time.
Gunn, who has repeatedly explained his discomfort with having to inform Cavill about the change, discussed these difficult decisions in a 2025 interview with the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast. He recounted, “It was quite unfortunate. I felt for the guy. Therefore, Peter [Safran] and I agreed that the best approach was to discuss it directly with him. He was extremely professional and understanding about it, asking only that he be allowed to announce the news himself.”
Looking ahead, DC Studios is actively developing a Wonder Woman reboot, although no director has been finalized and no release date has been set as of yet. The script for this reboot is being penned by Ana Nogueira, who is also involved in writing for a live-action Teen Titans film.
Besides the reboot, DC Studios is also exploring a prequel series titled Paradise Lost, focusing on Themyscira long before Diana was born. This project is currently on hold but remains in the development pipeline.
