Hayden Christensen Expands His Role as Darth Vader in the Star Wars Universe
Hayden Christensen is gearing up for an even more significant involvement as Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise.
Having portrayed Anakin Skywalker and ultimately transforming into Darth Vader in the final two movies of the Star Wars prequels that concluded in 2005, Hayden Christensen made a notable return to his role more than 15 years later in the 2022 Disney+ limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Following the acclaim of Kenobi, Christensen took on the role of Force Ghost Anakin in Disney+’s series Ahsoka and is confirmed to continue this portrayal in its upcoming second season. Yet, there’s potential for an even more substantial comeback as Darth Vader.
Speculation is rife about a standalone Darth Vader film, potentially starring Christensen, which would mark his first lead role in a Star Wars film in two decades. At the grand opening of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, Christensen spoke to E! News, confirming that, for now, the film remains speculative. Despite this, he expressed enthusiastic interest in the project should it materialize, stating he would be “thrilled” to pursue it.
E!: We’ve heard about a solo Vader film. Are you interested? What can you tell us?
Hayden Christensen: “I think those are just rumors.”
E!: But if it were to happen, would you be interested down the line?
Hayden Christensen: “Of course. Yeah, I would be thrilled to do that. But right now, those are just rumors.”
Unofficial sources suggest that the potential Darth Vader film would explore the timeline between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, a period during which Anakin fully embraced his Darth Vader persona under Emperor Palpatine’s tutelage while actively hunting Jedi. This era has been touched upon in various Star Wars series and films like Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Bad Batch, Maul – Shadow Lord, Andor, Rebels, and Rogue One. However, Kenobi remains the sole major project to delve deeply into Darth Vader’s narrative, leaving ample room for further exploration in a dedicated film.
Should Disney proceed with this Darth Vader-centered film, it would represent the first major Star Wars movie focusing on a villain. It would also be only the second standalone movie centered around an original trilogy character, following the 2018 prequel about Han Solo, Solo, which starred Alden Ehrenreich.
However, recent Star Wars ventures have seen mixed success at the box office outside the main Skywalker Saga. While the 2016 spinoff Rogue One grossed an impressive $1 billion worldwide, Solo only brought in $393 million against a substantial budget of $275 million, and the recent The Mandalorian and Grogu movie earned just $345 million globally against a $165 million budget.
Given this, if a Darth Vader film featuring Hayden Christensen were to advance, Disney might opt for a direct-to-streaming release on Disney+ rather than a traditional theatrical release. The future strategy for spinoffs, particularly their potential for theatrical release, might hinge significantly on the performance of the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling, which is slated for a theatrical release in May 2027.
