Maika Monroe’s They Follow Progresses Significantly
The anticipated sequel to the horror-thriller It Follows, titled They Follow, is making substantial progress after years of development. Since the original film’s successful debut in 2014, David Robert Mitchell, the writer and director, hinted at expanding the eerie narrative involving the enigmatic entity that stalks its victims. He expressed his enthusiasm, mentioning, “we just finished the fourth week of filming,” and he is “very excited” to present the film “when it’s ready.”
Previously, Monroe had disclosed in the summer of 2024 that They Follow was initially slated to start filming in early 2025. This timeline could have allowed the horror sequel to hit theaters later that same year, especially since a distributor was already in place. However, the filming schedule for the sequel to It Follows faced delays as both Monroe and Mitchell became increasingly busy with other projects like The End of Oak Street, the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s Reminders of Him, and the horror-thriller Victorian Psycho.
Filming for They Follow was reported to begin by the end of Summer 2026 according to recent updates. It was also disclosed that Naomi Ackie would continue her ventures into the horror genre with the sequel following her first horror role in Mike Flanagan’s Clayface within the DC Universe, although details about her character remain confidential.
With the confirmation from Mitchell that They Follow is four weeks into production, it raises questions about whether this marks a significant phase in the making of the horror sequel. Considering that the first film completed principal photography in about four to five weeks, if Mitchell is adopting a similar minimalist filmmaking approach, the sequel might be nearing its completion. However, given the ten-year gap between the two films, it’s plausible that Mitchell is opting for a more expansive and bold approach for this new installment, potentially extending the shooting period.
