James Gunn Unveils Major DCU Update: Dark Superhero Team-Up Movie Progress After 7 Months!

James Gunn Shares First Update On DCU's Dark Superhero Team-Up Movie After 7 Months

The development of a particularly ambitious DC Universe project appears to be on track, as James Gunn provides an exciting update about the film. Since the unveiling of DC Studios’ Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” in January 2023, a variety of works both for cinema and television have been underway.

With the new Superman movie and the second season of Peacemaker planned for 2025, Supergirl and Clayface are slated for release in 2026. Additionally, the HBO series Lanterns is expected to debut next year. Beyond the 2027 releases of Man of Tomorrow and The Batman Part II, the full release schedule for DC Studios remains under wraps as other films are still in various phases of development.

Progress Continues on DCU’s The Authority

One project that has progressed slowly since its initial introduction in January 2023 is The Authority. This delay is noteworthy especially since DC Studios’ Superman featured one of its key characters, Angela Spica, a.k.a. The Engineer, portrayed by María Gabriela de Faría. In February 2025, during a press event attended by ScreenRant, the film was described as the most challenging DCU project to perfect.

The tide may be turning for this superhero group, as Deadline recently received an update from Gunn. When pressed about the progress on this gritty ensemble film, the co-CEO of DC Studios revealed the following:

James Gunn: There’s someone who is a really good creator who talked to me the other day.

This statement led Deadline to further inquire, wondering if this could lead to the film being adapted into a television series instead. Yet, the renowned director of Superman and Man of Tomorrow remained reserved, adding:

James Gunn: Who knows. I’m probably not going to do certain movies with characters who (audiences) don’t know; it’s harder to get people in the theater for that kind of thing.

Implications for The Authority

Considering the franchise is in its early stages, it’s understandable that DC Studios might be contemplating converting the film into a television series, particularly since The Authority characters are relatively unknown to mainstream audiences. A TV series could provide a more extensive format to explore these characters than a two-hour movie might allow.

This is not the only project experiencing slow progress, as the TV shows Waller and Paradise Lost have encountered similar delays, and films like Sgt. Rock are not yet ready to proceed. According to Gunn’s previous statements, The Brave and The Bold movie and the Wonder Woman film are currently higher on the priority list.

If other series are taking longer to develop, it might be advantageous for this darker superhero group to transition to the small screen, particularly if this allows for quicker development. Following Gunn’s recent remarks, hopefully, The Authority will soon secure a promising future at DC Studios.
