Jeremy O. Harris Released From Custody In Japan After Drug Smuggling Allegations

Jeremy O. Harris Freed After Detention in Japan

Jeremy O. Harris, the noted playwright behind Slave Play, has been released from a Japanese detention center, where he had been held for three weeks on allegations of drug smuggling.

On November 16, upon his arrival in Okinawa from Taiwan, Harris was detained by local authorities. During an inspection, customs officials reportedly discovered 780 milligrams of Ecstasy in his carry-on tote bag. The Tony-nominated playwright and actor faced potential legal troubles under the strict drug laws of Japan, which could have led to up to seven years in prison.

According to a report by The New York Times, which referenced the Tomishiro Police Station in Okinawa’s Tomigusuku City, Harris was released on Monday. Details on whether he was formally charged remain undisclosed. However, a spokesperson for Harris confirmed that no charges were filed against him. Moreover, Harris is set to stay in Japan to carry out research for a forthcoming project.

In Japan, drug offenses are taken very seriously, and the penalties can be severe. Harris’s release without charges comes as a significant development in his case.
