Today, JioHotstar, a prominent streaming platform from India, announced the introduction of 25 new original productions from the southern regions, marking the commitment with an investment exceeding ₹4,000 crore (approximately $445 million).
During a glamorous event in Chennai, notable personalities including Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister Thiru Udhayanidhi Stalin and numerous celebrities from television and cinema were present. The event highlighted JioHotstar’s upcoming projects which include ‘Vishakha,’ a regional adaptation of the popular Hindi series ‘Aarya’, and other original TV shows like ‘Kaattaan’ featuring Vijay Sethupathi and ‘Pharma’ with Nivin Pauly. The film segment introduced titles such as ‘Lucky the Superstar’ and ‘Kenatha Kaanom’.
In total, the platform plans to release around 1,500 hours of content from the southern part of India over the next twelve months.
The launch event was attended by several luminaries from the South Indian entertainment industry, including actor-director-politician Kamal Haasan, Mohanlal of ‘Rajavinte Makan’ fame, actor-producer Nagarjuna, and Vijay Sethupathi. Key executives from JioHotstar like Sushant Sreeram, Head of SVOD & Chief Marketing Officer at JioStar, and Krishnan Kutty, Head of Cluster, Entertainment (South) were also present.
Over the next five years, the $445 million investment aims to boost the creative and production landscape in Tamil Nadu, with JioHotstar signing a letter of intent with the state government. The platform, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries and supported by Disney, plans to pioneer regional-first content formats, introduce fresh narratives, and promote new creative talents through the establishment of writing labs, mentorship programs, and skill development workshops.
“The Southern region has always been a hub of creativity, and it’s an honor to contribute to a region that is shaping the future of Indian storytelling,” remarked Kutty. “The narratives here are daring, the creators bold, and the audience’s engagement is deeper than seen elsewhere in the nation. We are dedicated to nurturing this environment with substantial, prolonged investments in talent, infrastructure, and innovative narrative formats. In just the past ten months alone, we have seen over 500 creators, directors, and showrunners join our initiative, each offering a unique perspective that resonates throughout India and beyond.”
Returning scripted series on JioHotstar include ‘Kerala Crime Files’ Season 3, ‘Save the Tigers’ Season 3, ‘Heartbeat’ Season 3, and ‘The Good Wife’ Season 2. Additionally, new originals such as ‘Cousins and Kalyanams’, ‘Moodu Lantharlu’, ‘LBW – Love Beyond Wicket’, ‘Resort’, ‘Secret Stories: ROSLIN’, ‘Lingam’, and ‘Vikram on Duty’ are set to debut.
In the realm of unscripted content, the localized versions of ‘Bigg Boss’ in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada continue to captivate audiences. New unscripted formats like ‘Comedy Cooks’, ‘Mad for Each Other’, and ‘Second Love’ are launching, with ‘Roadies’ being produced in Telugu for the first time.
