Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s ‘Cloud’ Sets U.S. Release Date

EXCLUSIVE: The new film Cloud, both written and directed by the esteemed Japanese filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa, is set to premiere in U.S. cinemas on July 18.

Distributed by Sideshow and Janus Films, the movie will debut in New York on July 18, and will be shown in Los Angeles a week later on July 25, before it begins its nationwide release.

The cast includes Masaki Suda (from The Boy and the Heron), Kotone Furukawa (known for Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy), Daiken Okudaira, Amane Okayama, Yoshiyoshi Arakawa, and Masataka Kubota.

Cloud was first shown at the Venice Film Festival and was later featured at the Toronto International Film Festival. It was also chosen as Japan’s official entry for the Academy Awards.

Following the release of Cloud, Janus Films plans to bring Ira Sachs’ Peter Hujar’s Day to theaters in the upcoming fall season.

The thriller, produced by Nikkatsu in Japan, centers on Yoshii, a young and ambitious Tokyo factory worker who moonlights in the grey market, deceiving both buyers and sellers. After accumulating a considerable amount of money through his schemes, Yoshii seeks to sever his ties with society. He relocates from the city, distances himself from his girlfriend and relies heavily on a loyal new assistant. However, his newfound isolation and success soon attract a string of eerie and dangerous events that could destroy everything he has built.

Kurosawa is known for directing more than 25 feature films, including notable works such as Pulse, Tokyo Sonata, and Wife of a Spy.

This year, Janus Films’ lineup also features Alain Guiraudie’s Misericordia, David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds, Bi Gan’s Resurrection, and Jia Zhangke’s Caught by the Tides.
