Luxbox, a Paris-based film distribution company, has recently announced the acquisition of three early films by acclaimed Portuguese director João Pedro Rodrigues. This marks a significant addition to Luxbox’s burgeoning classic film series.
Recent Acquisitions Reflect Broadening Scope
This strategic move comes on the heels of Luxbox’s acquisition of the entire body of work by the recently deceased Hungarian director Béla Tarr, as well as a comprehensive collection of 34 films, both features and shorts, by another Portuguese luminary, Manoel de Oliveira.

The films acquired by Luxbox include Rodrigues’ debut, *Phantom* (2000), followed by *Two Drifters* (2005), and *To Die Like a Man* (2009). These films are noted for their deep exploration of human desire and distinct emphasis on queer narratives.

In his first film, *Phantom*, Rodrigues introduces us to Sergio, a refuse collector in Lisbon who spends his nights searching for transient sexual encounters. *Two Drifters* narrates the story of Rui, mourning the loss of his lover Pedro on their anniversary, and his unexpected friendship with Odete, a woman fascinated by the deceased Pedro, whom she never met. *To Die Like a Man*, which was featured in the Cannes Un Certain Regard section, tells the poignant story of a transgender woman attempting to reconcile her past male identity with her present, amidst complications involving her young lover and her troubled son.
Restoration and Preservation of Classic Films
The restoration of these films was meticulously undertaken by Rosa Filmes from the original 35 mm camera negatives, with the assistance of the Portuguese Cinematheque which preserved these negatives. The comprehensive restoration process, including scanning, color correction, and digital restoration, was performed in collaboration with Cineric Portugal and Irma Lucia Efeitos Especiais. Additionally, the digital sound restoration was expertly handled by Hugo Leitão.
Collaborative Efforts in Film Restoration
The entire restoration and digitization initiative was coordinated by the Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema, as part of the FILMar project under the European Financial Mechanism EEA Grants for the 2020–2024 period.
