Nancy Meyers’ New Star-Studded Film: Netflix Pass, Warner Bros Green Light!

The Nancy Meyers Movie That Netflix Passed On Is Moving Forward At WB With A Star-Studded Cast

The upcoming film by Nancy Meyers, previously declined by Netflix, is now progressing under Warner Bros. with an impressive lineup of actors. Meyers is acclaimed for her work as a writer and director of several hit romantic comedies, including The Parent Trap (1998), What Women Want (2000), Something’s Gotta Give (2003), and It’s Complicated (2009). Her most recent film, The Intern, came out in 2015.

Initially set to be a Netflix production, Meyers’ forthcoming film was sidelined by the streaming service in 2023 due to budgetary concerns, with costs soaring above $100 million. While Netflix had approved a budget of $130 million, Meyers was looking for $150 million, which caused a deadlock.

Subsequently, Warner Bros. has taken up the project, now involving stars such as Penélope Cruz, Kieran Culkin, Jude Law, Emma Mackey, and Owen Wilson, who are in the final stages of negotiations. The release is scheduled for December 25, 2027. Details about the plot remain confidential, and any previously circulated plot details have been deemed inaccurate.

Jude Law has worked with Nancy Meyers before in The Holiday (2006), and Kieran Culkin appeared in Father of the Bride (1991) and Father of the Bride Part II (1995), both projects that Meyers co-authored.

Originally envisioned for Netflix with both Owen Wilson and Penélope Cruz already on board, and Scarlett Johansson and Michael Fassbender in talks, the film was budgeted between $130 million and $150 million, including $80 million for major production costs, which Netflix found unsustainable.

Merely two days after Netflix withdrew from the project in March 2023, Warner Bros. quickly stepped in to take it over, keen on advancing with the film. Adam Driver also considered a role before deciding to join the cast of Heat 2.

Among the current cast, Penélope Cruz, an Oscar winner for Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) with additional nominations for her roles in Volver (2006), Nine (2009), and Parallel Mothers (2021), is set to star. Kieran Culkin, recently winning an Oscar for A Real Pain (2024) and known for his Emmy-nominated performance as Roman Roy in HBO’s Succession, joins her.

Jude Law, twice nominated for an Oscar for The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) and Cold Mountain (2003), along with Emma Mackey, famed for her role in Netflix’s Sex Education and soon to appear in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia adaptation, will also feature in Nancy Meyers’ new project.
