Netflix Sets Chinese-Language Slate Featuring Likes Of Ethan Ruan, Kent Tsai and Wallace Huo

Netflix has announced the release of seven new series in Chinese, featuring popular actors such as Ethan Ruan, Kent Tsai, and Wallace Huo throughout the upcoming year.

Although Netflix is not available in China, the company has significantly invested in Taiwan and productions in the local language. The upcoming series include titles such as Miracles of the ER, Confessions, The Fixers, Bloody Smart, How to Survive Med School, Dogman, and Pacify (currently a working title).

Maya Huang, Netflix’s Head of Chinese Language Content, commented, “Chinese-language storytelling is uniquely vibrant, emotionally profound, and courageous in its exploration of complex, often darker aspects of humanity. We are particularly thrilled about projects that push creative boundaries and immerse viewers in exceptional narratives and experiences. Our objective is to elevate local storytelling by collaborating with Taiwan’s talented creators, providing them with enhanced support, training, and resources.”

These new series will join other Netflix offerings like the action-packed Million-Follower Detective, starring Hong Kong’s Ekin Cheng, and the fantasy series Agent From Above, adapted from the novels by Taiwanese writer Teensy.

Miracles of the ER features a cast including Wallace Huo, Cheryl Yang, Kent Tsai, and others, under the direction of Li Zhi-qiang and Huang Jing-tzu, who also contributed to the script with Lin-Yun-shuan. Produced by Jade Lee, the show is set to premiere in the fourth quarter of 2026. The series centers on the dynamic and challenging environment of Central University Hospital’s ER, led by associate director Zhou Cheng-jun (played by Huo), who mentors a newly graduated, average-performing medical student (played by Tsai) amid frequent medical emergencies and ethical challenges.

Confessions brings together the team behind the successful film The Pig, The Snake and The Pigeon, including writer-director Wong Ching-po. This marks Wong’s first series in the local language and stars Ethan Ruan and Gingle Wang among others. The thriller delves into a violent crime in Taipei in 2004 that forever links three families through generations of hidden anger and ethical dilemmas.

The Fixers features a lineup of actors including Christopher Lee and Shou Lou, with direction by Hung Tzu-hsuan. This action-comedy series follows a down-and-out gangster who becomes involved with a secretive group of fixers from the ancient Qinghe Temple, who solve problems for both the underworld and the powerful.

Directed by Hsieh Chun-yi, Bloody Smart explores the strange occurrences in a school town obsessed with perfection, where a mysterious tree bears a fruit that unleashes residents’ deepest desires, leading to unforeseen consequences.

How to Survive Med School is a narrative about a young man mistakenly enrolled in a top medical school, striving to switch to an aeronautics program to fulfill his astronautical dreams with his girlfriend. The series is directed by Giddens Ko and co-directed by Kai Ko and Tsai Jia-yin.

Pacify, directed by Derek Kwok and Anthony Yan, follows a part-time worker who gets involved in supernatural exorcisms after her sister’s possession, uncovering a chilling conspiracy.

Netflix has been actively expanding its investment in Taiwan since 2020, launching initiatives such as a writers’ workshop and a production training program to strengthen the local creative industry.

Despite previous challenges in establishing service in China due to stringent censorship, Netflix continues to enhance its offerings of Chinese-language content. Today, Huang emphasized the platform’s dedication to showcasing Chinese-language narratives that captivate global audiences through inventive and compelling storytelling.
