The film Truth & Treason has garnered positive reactions from film critics. Produced by Angel Studios, known for the provocative 2023 film Sound of Freedom, this new release is a WWII drama that centers on a young person who forms a resistance movement against the Nazis in Germany.
Rotten Tomatoes has compiled reviews from critics to provide an official Tomatometer rating for the film. Although this score may change as more reviews come in, currently, 13 critics have contributed to an impressive score of 92% for Truth & Treason.
The film received one lukewarm review with a score of 2 out of 4, but the majority of reviews for Truth & Treason have been positive, ranging from strong to nearly perfect. Notably, three critiques awarded it 3.5 out of 4, and another notable review from Keith Garlington of Keith & the Movies gave it a 4 out of 5.
Critics are united in their praise for the film’s gripping narrative and effective portrayal by a talented cast, which includes Ewan Horrocks (The Last Kingdom), Joanna Christie (Narcos), Nye Occomore (Grantchester), Ferdinand McKay (Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time), Daf Thomas (The Undeclared War), and Rupert Evans (Hellboy).
Despite its high Rotten Tomatoes score, Truth & Treason has not performed as well at the box office, ranking sixth during its opening weekend with a modest gross of $2.5 million, missing a top five debut. It’s important to note that box office returns are not always indicative of the quality of films released by Angel Studios.
The distributor has previously implemented a unique pay-it-forward ticket campaign during the release of Sound of Freedom in 2023, where they encouraged moviegoers to purchase extra tickets so others could watch the film for free. The success of this campaign in terms of actual tickets claimed, however, remains uncertain.
As a result, while Sound of Freedom reported earnings of $251 million, these figures may not reflect the true financial success. Similarly, the high Rotten Tomatoes score for Truth & Treason should be considered cautiously as it is based on a relatively small number of reviews, and only two are from critics recognized as “Top Critics” by the site.
One of these Top Critics, Robert Daniels from RogerEbert.com, wrote the sole negative review of the film. This raises questions about the potential bias of other reviews, though it’s possible more top critics might review and appreciate the film in the future.
