The updated version of Possession by Paramount has now secured a launch date.
Initially announced in 2024 with Parker Finn (Smile) at the helm as writer and director, the remake of the 1981 horror cult favorite was later acquired by Paramount Pictures after a competitive bidding process. By April 2026, actors Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley had been selected for the lead roles, with Paul Dano and Diego Calva joining soon after. The project has now confirmed its release date.
According to Deadline, the release for Paramount’s Possession remake is set for June 11, 2027. It will share this release date with Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon 2, a live-action adaptation of the 2014 animated movie. While How to Train Your Dragon 2 is expected to attract a younger audience and dominate the box office, the likely R-rated Possession aims to offer something for adult viewers. The week before, on June 4, Columbia Pictures will release JT Mollner’s Skeletons featuring Brie Larson, along with Lionsgate’s John Rambo. The following week, June 18, sees Columbia launching the much-anticipated animated sequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
The original Possession, directed by Andrzej Żuławski, is a 1981 horror film that tells the story of a spy in Cold War-era West Berlin (played by the late Sam Neill) and his wife (Isabelle Adjani), who exhibits increasingly bizarre behavior after requesting a divorce.
