The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s popular novel Regretting You is set to premiere on streaming services shortly. Hoover, a bestselling author, has seen several of her novels turned into movies or TV shows, such as It Ends With Us, and upcoming adaptations like Reminders of Him and Verity slated for release in 2026. The newest film based on her book, Regretting You, features Allison Williams and McKenna Grace in leading roles.
Paramount has scheduled the release of Regretting You on Paramount+ for Tuesday, December 23, just in time for the festive season. The film initially launched in cinemas on October 24 and unexpectedly performed well at the box office, earning $90 million from a budget of $30 million.
Upon its debut, Regretting You secured the second spot at the box office during its opening weekend, right behind Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc. Surpassing expectations, the romantic comedy climbed to the top position in its second weekend and stayed within the Top 10 for five consecutive weeks.
The film also stars Mason Thames, Dave Franco, Scott Eastwood, Willa Fitzgerald, Clancy Brown, Sam Morelos, and Ethan Costanilla, alongside Williams and Grace. Williams and Grace portray a mother and daughter duo, who struggle through a tumultuous relationship following a devastating car accident. Throughout the story, Grace’s character, Clara, encounters Miller Adams (played by Thames) and an unexpected youthful romance blossoms, despite her mother’s disapproval.
The direction of Regretting You was managed by Josh Boone, known for other romantic comedies like The Fault in Our Stars and Stuck in Love. Boone has also ventured into the superhero and thriller genres with projects like New Mutants and executive producing The Stand. The screenplay was crafted by Susan McMartin.
Despite its commercial success, Regretting You received critical backlash, earning a meager 27% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics labeling the film as uninspired, dull, and overly lengthy.
However, filmgoers responded more positively, awarding the adaptation an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes. A notable aspect of the film was the palpable chemistry between Grace and Thames, which has even fueled off-screen dating speculations.
In contrast, Hoover’s previous adaptation, It Ends with Us, was even more successful, bringing in $351 million against a $25 million budget. It received a 55% rating from critics and an 87% approval from audiences. That production, however, was marred by significant issues behind the scenes, leading to Blake Lively filing a sexual harassment and misconduct complaint against director Justin Baldoni.
Following Regretting You, Grace appeared in the horror hit Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, which grossed over $200 million. In 2026, she is set to star in two major projects, Scream 7 and The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Meanwhile, Franco is set to voice a character in Pixar’s upcoming film Hoppers, scheduled for a March 2026 release.
Grace’s career continues to soar, and Regretting You marks another significant milestone in her growing list of accomplishments.
