It’s a moment that, even though she’s in distress, Christy is still thinking about the impact on others. She’s aware of the potential trouble she might cause for someone else, which shows her selflessness. The shooting of this scene was interesting. It was at the very end of our shooting day, we were out of time. We managed to shoot it in just one take, in five to seven minutes. It remains one of my favorite scenes as well.
O’Brian discussed the film’s climactic scene featuring Christy and Jim Martin (played by Ben Foster), Christy’s coach and abusive husband, who almost kills her. Although O’Brian was not present during the shooting of this intense scene, she expressed how moved she was by it and appreciated the director David Michôd’s subtle approach.
I wasn’t there, and frankly, I’m thankful for that. Like many, I find it hard to watch violence against women. What I really admired about David’s direction was how much was conveyed through expressions rather than explicit violence. You didn’t see the repeated stabbing; it was more about the emotional impact. Some of the other violent scenes were also implied rather than shown directly, which reflects the hidden traumas that many experience. These acts often occur out of public view, creating a facade of a normal relationship. Portraying this mostly off-screen was a powerful choice and, in my view, more tasteful.
The film Christy transcends the typical sports drama by addressing serious issues like domestic violence. O’Brian highlights the significance of focusing on the characters’ expressions and suggesting off-screen events, which effectively convey the underlying trauma without explicit depiction.
