Anticipation Builds for The Sheep Detectives
As the premiere of The Sheep Detectives approaches, the film is already receiving a wave of positive critiques. Created by The Last of Us’s Craig Mazin and featuring Bella Ramsey, this new mystery movie is making a notable impression among reviewers.
The movie made a remarkable entry on Rotten Tomatoes, securing an impressive 93% rating. Critics have described the film as entertaining, endearing, and filled with fanciful elements, drawing parallels with the classic film Babe. Director Kyle Balda, together with screenwriter Mazin, has woven an emotional and engaging narrative with a murder mystery at its core, ensuring the storyline is packed with unexpected developments.
Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, the movie stars Hugh Jackman as George Hardy, a shepherd who is mysteriously murdered. While human detectives, the media, and George’s relatives struggle to piece together the tragedy, a group of sheep led by George take it upon themselves to crack the case and find the truth behind their owner’s death.
Bella Ramsey lends her voice to a sheep named Zora, alongside a star-studded cast of voice actors including Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Chris O’Dowd, Brett Goldstein, and Rhys Darby. The film also features an impressive human cast including Emma Thompson, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Tosin Cole, Molly Gordon, Hong Chau, Conleth Hill, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, and Mandeep Dhillon.
Director Kyle Balda, known for his work on family-oriented films such as Despicable Me, Minions, and The Lorax, brings his expertise to this project. Producers Lindsay Doran, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner have collaborated with Balda to bring this unique story to life.
Screenwriter Craig Mazin is also the showrunner for the acclaimed HBO series The Last of Us, based on the video game series by Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley. The series, which is filming its third season in British Columbia, portrays the perilous journey of Joel Miller and Ellie in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies due to a fungal outbreak and is set to premiere in 2027.
Ramsey, who voices Ellie in The Last of Us and was previously known for their role as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones, has been involved in various other projects including Holmes & Watson, Judy, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, and His Dark Materials. Now, Ramsey reunites with Mazin in The Sheep Detectives, offering a more family-friendly experience compared to the intense drama of The Last of Us.
The Sheep Detectives is poised to compete with major box office releases including Mortal Kombat II, the second weekend of The Devil Wears Prada 2, and The Mandalorian and Grogu from the Star Wars saga, which releases two weeks later.
The Sheep Detectives is set to hit theaters on Friday, May 8, 2026.
