Underdog Horror Film Smashes Box Office: Rakes in 6 Times Its Budget!

New Underdog Horror Movie Has Already Made More Than 6 Times Its Budget At The Box Office

The latest horror film to hit cinemas is Iron Lung, directed and led by Mark Fischbach, better known by his YouTube moniker Markiplier. This film has quickly become one of the standout cinematic events of 2026.

Originating as a popular content creator, Fischbach gained fame through his gaming content starting in 2012 and later ventured into interactive productions with YouTube Originals such as A Heist with Markiplier and In Space with Markiplier. His recent foray into the film industry is proving to be a massive success, taking the global box office by storm and achieving this with a relatively modest budget compared to his competitors.

As per Deadline, Iron Lung launched with an impressive $17.8 million, including an estimated $3.9 million from limited screenings in the UK and Ireland. Remarkably, the film was produced on a budget of less than $3 million, earning over six times its cost, a rare achievement for an independent film.

The plot of Iron Lung, inspired by the 2022 video game by David Szymanski, revolves around a convict named Simon, portrayed by Fischbach. Simon is compelled to navigate a submarine through the bloody oceans of a desolate moon following a catastrophic event known as the Quiet Rapture, which eradicated most of humanity and all stars unexpectedly.

The reception of Iron Lung has seen a split among critics and audiences alike on Rotten Tomatoes, with a critical approval at 50% and audience favorability at 89%. The film features a cast including Caroline Kaplan, Troy Baker, Elsie Lovelock, Elle LaMont, and Mick Lauer.

In parallel, another horror film, Send Help directed by Sam Raimi and starring Dylan O’Brien and Rachel McAdams, has also made a notable entrance in theaters, amassing over $28 million during its opening and receiving acclaim from both critics and audiences, scoring 93% and 87% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes.

Iron Lung is now showing in theaters.
