The film Wicked: For Good has achieved a significant milestone, making a splash in its first week at the box office. This movie, which is a cinematic adaptation of the second act of the popular Broadway musical telling the backstory of the Wicked Witch of the West, premiered on November 21.
The launch of Wicked: For Good was extraordinarily successful, raking in $147 million in its opening weekend domestically and setting a new record for the highest-grossing debut weekend of a Broadway musical film. It surpassed the previous record of $112.5 million held by the original Wicked film from 2024.
According to Variety, Wicked: For Good pulled in $12.6 million on Thanksgiving Day alone. By the end of its first week, the film’s total domestic gross had soared to $207.2 million, making it one of only nine films in 2025 to exceed the $200 million mark domestically.
In just one week, Wicked: For Good has outperformed most of the major domestic releases of 2025, including Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning ($197.4 million), Thunderbolts* ($190.3 million), F1 The Movie ($189.5 million), The Conjuring: Last Rites ($177.7 million), and Weapons ($151.5 million).
However, it’s still uncertain how far Wicked: For Good will go in terms of total box office revenue. Despite achieving this impressive milestone, the sequel earned less on Thanksgiving than the original Wicked, which also opened the Friday before the holiday. On Thanksgiving 2024, Wicked earned $16.8 million.
Here’s a comparison of the daily revenue drops for the two Wicked films during their first weeks:

The 2024 release of Wicked garnered $81.2 million over the 3-day Thanksgiving weekend and $118.3 million over the 5-day holiday period. These figures surpass the current projections for For Good, which are $61 million and $91 million, respectively.
These comparisons are particularly relevant as both films faced competition from major Disney sequels during their Thanksgiving releases (Moana 2 in 2024 and Zootopia 2 in 2025). Although the sequel is currently ahead of the original in terms of early earnings, the initial lead that For Good achieved is quickly diminishing.
While For Good might still surpass the original’s global total of $758.4 million, it seems unlikely to reach the billion-dollar mark by the end of its theatrical run.
Audiences have generally responded positively to the new movie, awarding it a 94% score on the Verified Hot Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter, slightly below the original’s 95%. However, critics have been less favorable towards Wicked: For Good, giving it a 67% rating on the Tomatometer, significantly lower than the original’s 88%. This discrepancy may be contributing to its slower performance in the first week.
