Recent financial insights from a DC Universe analysis have unveiled impressive earnings for James Gunn’s Superman film. This summer, under the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” series, Superman marked his cinematic comeback, featuring David Corenswet as the last survivor of Krypton.
A report from Forbes indicates that Superman has generated over $100 million in profits for DC Studios and is projected to reach “nearly $150 million globally by the end of this year.” The film has amassed $616.58 million worldwide, with $262.4 million coming from international markets and $354.1 million from domestic revenues.
The reboot of the legendary character not only rejuvenated the franchise but also allowed DC Studios to claim the top spot for the highest-grossing comic book movie of 2025, outperforming all of Marvel Studios’ films. The Fantastic Four: First Steps, released just two weeks after Superman, concluded its theatrical journey with $521.8 million worldwide.
Other titles like Thunderbolts* garnered $382.4 million globally, and Captain America: Brave New World achieved $415.1 million worldwide. Superman stood out as the sole superhero film in 2025 to surpass the $600 million mark.
The Superman film has been warmly received, with Corenswet’s debut in the DCU earning an 83% Critics’ Score and a 90% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. The cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
The film’s success extended to HBO Max, where it was streamed after a 70-day theatrical window. In just 10 days, Gunn’s superhero project attracted over 13 million viewers worldwide, as reported by Variety, marking it the most watched release on Warner Bros.’s streaming platform in its first 10 days since the 2023 Barbie movie.
The sale of Warner Bros. Discovery is currently a hot topic in Hollywood, with several prominent figures rumored to be interested in purchasing the studio. Should a merger with Warner Bros. occur, Paramount’s David Ellison is expected to retain significant creative figures, including Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran.
Following the success of Superman, the sequel, Man of Tomorrow, is officially in development, with Gunn set to direct the next chapter, scheduled to start production in 2026. Gunn, who also penned the screenplay, plans to explore a storyline where the iconic hero and Lex Luthor must collaborate to tackle a shared adversary. The sequel is anticipated to premiere in cinemas on July 9, 2027.
