Minions & Monsters is putting together an impressively formidable cast.
The eagerly awaited Minions & Monsters marks the third chapter of the Minions saga, which acts as prequels to the four films of the Despicable Me series. The entire collection of six movies has amassed a staggering $5.622 billion globally, securing its spot as the top-earning animated movie series ever and placing it as the 14th highest-grossing film series overall.
Illumination and Universal Pictures have revealed that six prominent actors are lending their voices to Minions & Monsters. The new additions feature Academy Award recipients Jeff Bridges, Christoph Waltz, and Allison Janney alongside Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, and Trey Parker (known for his previous role as the villain Balthazar Bratt in Despicable Me 3).
The release included an official announcement video showcasing a Minion named Dick who appears less than thrilled as he waits for his name to be announced amidst the list of celebrated cast members:
Below is a statement from Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination:
Minions have consistently exuded a charmingly defiant quality, and Minions & Monsters encapsulates a rich blend of humor and chaos. Throughout production, Pierre and his team at Illumination have maintained an impressive level of craftsmanship that has excited me immensely. The ensemble of voice actors brings remarkable depth, the narrative is both engaging and surprising, and a particularly beautiful aspect of the film is how it pays tribute to the history of cinema and the comedic pioneers who inspired these beloved characters.
While specific details about the roles these voice actors will fill remain undisclosed, it’s doubtful that Trey Parker will revisit his Despicable Me 3 character, given the new movie is set in the 1920s, decades before Balthazar Bratt’s era as a child actor in the 1980s. Nonetheless, Parker might portray a vintage Hollywood relative of Bratt, fitting well with the movie’s homage to classic comedy and horror films of that time.
Allison Janney previously voiced the character Madge Nelson in 2015’s Minions, set in 1968. It remains to be seen if there will be any connection to Nelson in this film. However, the Despicable Me series has a history of recasting actors in new roles, as seen with Kristen Wiig who played Miss Hattie before voicing Lucy Wilde in the sequels.
Regardless of the roles they’re set to play, this casting announcement sustains the Minions spinoffs’ trend of attracting significant Hollywood talent. Past stars of the series include Oscar winners and nominees like Janney, Sandra Bullock, Michael Keaton, Geoffrey Rush, Taraji P. Henson, and Michelle Yeoh.
