Emma Stone Set to Star in a New Romantic Comedy
Emma Stone is confirmed to be taking on a new project in the romantic comedy genre.
Emma Stone is well-known for her roles in popular romantic comedies such as La La Land, Easy A, Crazy, Stupid, Love, and Aloha. Her performance in La La Land earned her an Oscar for Best Actress, contributing to the film’s six Academy Awards. In recent years, however, she has shifted her focus away from rom-coms to work on various projects with director Yorgos Lanthimos, including films like Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, and Bugonia.
Emma Stone, alongside Chris Pine, has recently finalized agreements to appear in The Catch, a forthcoming romantic comedy by Universal Pictures, set to hit theaters on May 21, 2027. Directed by Dave McCary, the screenplay’s latest version was penned by Jen Statsky of Hacks fame and Travis Helwig, following an original spec script by Patrick Kang and Michael Levin. Although specific plot details remain under wraps, it’s understood that The Catch was one of several options Stone considered, ultimately selecting it after being drawn to the latest screenplay revision.
This film marks Stone’s first return to feature films since her recent project Bugonia with Lanthimos, for which she received an Oscar nomination. This nomination made her the youngest female and second-youngest individual to achieve seven Oscar nominations, a record previously held by Meryl Streep and Walt Disney respectively.
In the realm of romantic comedies, Chris Pine brings his own substantial experience with titles like The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Just My Luck, Blind Dating, and This Means War. Recent years have seen him exploring less mainstream projects, including his directorial debut, Poolman. Now, both he and Stone are making a return to the genre that has played a significant role in their careers.
The film’s director, Dave McCary, who is also Stone’s husband, has a background in directing and writing for Saturday Night Live. In 2024, their production company, Fruit Tree, signed a first-look deal with Universal, having already produced films like Poor Things, I Saw the TV Glow, A Real Pain, and Bugonia.
Production of The Catch is also supported by Shawn Levy and Dan Levine through their 21 Laps production company. Levy, a well-known producer currently involved with Star Wars: Starfighter, a forthcoming addition to the franchise which he directed and is set for release a week after The Catch, wrapped up filming in December 2025.
