The DC Universe franchise is continuing to grow, with new additions on both cinema and television screens, yielding diverse reactions.
The first chapter of the DCU, titled “God and Monsters,” under James Gunn’s direction, is actively populating the superhero world with a myriad of characters, both heroic and villainous. Despite this, the year 2026 has been a mixed bag for DC Studios as the fall season progresses.
In a recent conversation with Variety, Fillion, who reprised his role as Guy Gardner in Lanterns, shared his perspectives on Supergirl, which has received a lukewarm reception and had an average performance at the box office. A seasoned DCU actor, Fillion remarked, “I’m not fully aware of the audience reactions, but I can share my own. I’m always thrilled when the perfect actor fits a role perfectly. Milly Alcock's portrayal of Supergirl is outstanding, and it’s a joy to see these beloved characters come to life. I’ve never been let down by James Gunn’s work, which is fortunate since he tends to cast me in most of his projects!”
Despite only achieving a global box office revenue of $126.4 million, the Supergirl film directed by Craig Gillespie has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 53%, derived from 377 reviews. Nevertheless, general audiences appreciated the film more than critics did, as evidenced by its 72% audience score. Even though Alcock’s standalone movie wasn’t one of the strongest entries in the DCU, the character Supergirl will return in the 2027 film Man of Tomorrow, which will also feature Fillion’s latest portrayal of Guy.
The upcoming Superman film will not only see the return of David Corenswet as the Man of Steel but will also introduce Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Together, they will confront the formidable Brainiac, brought to life on the big screen by Lars Eidinger.
While principal photography for Man of Tomorrow has concluded, Fillion is already preparing for his next DCU role. He revealed to Variety that he has completed his voice work for the forthcoming animated series Mister Miracle, where his character has appeared in the most projects within Gunn’s DCU. Fillion expressed excitement about this, stating, “It’s personally thrilling for me as I previously held the record for portraying the most characters in the MCU, and now, I’ve achieved the same feat in the DCU. It’s a great position to be in. I feel like I’m sitting pretty.” As of now, there is no set premiere date for this adult comic book series.
