The Arrival of Supergirl in James Gunn’s DC Universe
The introduction of Supergirl into James Gunn’s DC Universe heralds exciting new opportunities for character crossovers within the superhero realm.
Scheduled for her grand appearance in the 2025 release of Superman, Milly Alcock is set to portray Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, in an upcoming DCU movie directed by Craig Gillespie, known for his work on I, Tonya. The film boasts a stellar cast including Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa, who will make a special appearance as Lobo. This film will mark Lobo’s first appearance on the big screen, a significant event for the character known as the Woman of Tomorrow. Additionally, David Corenswet will cameo as Superman.
During an interview with Screen Rant at CCXP Mexico, Milly Alcock shared her thoughts on potential future crossovers within the DC Universe and her character’s place in it. When questioned about which character she would like her character, Kara, to meet next, Alcock expressed that it hadn’t crossed her mind before, but it was something she would start considering.
Screen Rant: Looking ahead, you’re facing potentially a long future with Supergirl. Are there any characters you’re particularly excited to collaborate with, like Jimmy Olsen, with whom Supergirl historically shares a close relationship?
Milly Alcock: That’s an interesting question. It hadn’t occurred to me, but now it’s something I’ll think about. No specific names yet, but I’ll definitely start considering it.
Although Alcock did not specify her preferred DC crossover, the possibility of her character interacting with Superman’s friend Jimmy Olsen, portrayed by Skyler Gisondo, is already set within the franchise’s storyline. Both characters appeared in the previous year’s Superman movie but did not share any scenes. The movie concluded with Jimmy Olsen reluctantly entering a relationship with the overly attached Eve Teschmacher.
In various media, Jimmy and Kara have been depicted either as romantic interests or as friends. Their most notable portrayal was in the 2015 Supergirl series, with other adaptations like Smallville and My Adventures With Superman exploring their relationship as well. The comics also support the idea of them as a couple, making it a feasible direction for the DCU to explore.
Even though Kara and Jimmy have yet to meet on screen, their connection through Clark Kent suggests their paths might cross in future narratives. Aside from Jimmy Olsen, Supergirl has a history with other iconic characters like Nightwing, rumored to be joining the DCU, and could potentially join the Justice Gang, as hinted in the second season of Peacemaker.
Regardless of the paths her character might take, Milly Alcock’s Supergirl is set to return to the big screen in Supergirl, with a release date of June 26, 2026.
