New Leadership at Amazon MGM Studios in Japan

Amazon MGM Studios has appointed a new executive for its operations in Japan.

Buddy Marini Takes Charge

Effective immediately, Buddy Marini, formerly of Warner Bros. Discovery Japan, has taken on the role of Head of Amazon MGM Studios Japan. Marini will operate out of Tokyo in his new position.

Previously, Marini held the position of Managing Director at Warner Bros. Discovery Japan, where he was responsible for a wide range of operations including streaming services, original productions, pay-TV networks, and licensing. He managed a substantial team of 300 staff members during his tenure there.

Before his stint at Warner Bros., Marini was instrumental in founding the manga platform Mangamo, and he also held CEO positions at Hulu Japan and managed Avex Asia in Hong Kong.

Industry Experience and Strategic Fit

Marini’s extensive background in manga and anime makes him a strategic fit for Amazon MGM Studios, especially given the company’s focus on enhancing its anime offerings. Amazon has recognized anime as a pivotal element in attracting and maintaining Prime Video subscribers. Gaurav Gandhi, the APAC chief at Amazon, recently expressed the company’s goal to become the top global destination for anime content.

Responsibilities and Goals

In his new role at Amazon MGM Studios, Marini will oversee the Japanese studio’s business operations. His responsibilities will include leading the development and production of local originals in film, TV series, and anime. He will collaborate with creators and production partners, expand the content pipeline in both scripted and unscripted formats, and work closely with Amazon’s global teams to promote Japanese content on Prime Video.

Nicole Clemens, Head of International at Amazon MGM Studios, Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, highlighted the importance of the Japanese market. She noted the strong demand among Japanese customers for locally produced series and movies. “Buddy’s deep understanding of Japanese entertainment, along with his proven track record in streaming and content production, and his robust connections with key creative and distribution partners, ideally position him to propel Amazon MGM Studios’ growth and success in Japan,” she added.

Marini will report to Nicole Clemens, who took on her current role at Amazon in June of the previous year after serving as the chief at Paramount TV Studios.

Reflecting on his appointment, Marini expressed his enthusiasm about his new role, “Throughout my career, I have been committed to working closely with creators, partners, and teams across various sectors including film, television, manga, anime, and streaming. I am driven by a passion to ensure that great stories achieve their maximum audience reach,” he stated.

Prime Video Expanding Its Anime Collection

Prime Video’s dedication to enriching its anime library is evident with titles such as Fist of the North Star: Hokuto No Ken, The Ghost in the Shell, and From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman included in its offerings.
