The action film Citizen Vigilante, starring Armie Hammer, has been released globally despite initial bans.
Since 2021, Armie Hammer has been embroiled in controversy following accusations from three women of rape and abuse, which led to his withdrawal from numerous projects and losing representation from his agency and publicist. Despite these allegations, no criminal charges were filed against him due to insufficient evidence, paving his way back to the screen in 2024.
As reported by Variety, Armie Hammer’s contentious return to cinema, Citizen Vigilante, is set for international distribution after Quiver Distribution secured the rights for most of the world, with exclusions only for the UK, German-speaking areas, South Korea, and Taiwan. Quiver had previously launched the film in North America on June 19.
In a notable marketing stunt, Elon Musk made the movie freely available on his X platform to his roughly 240 million followers, allowing it to be downloaded entirely for a 48-hour period. This strategy, while potentially diminishing direct revenue, provided publicity that would be unaffordable for a smaller distributor like Quiver.
The action thriller, directed and produced by German filmmaker Uwe Boll (Alone in the Dark), features Armie Hammer as a vigilante disillusioned with faltering law enforcement who aims his wrath at corrupt leaders and criminals, prominently migrants. The film also includes performances from Costas Mandylor, Désirée Giorgetti, Steffen Mennekes, and others.
Following its limited theatrical and digital release in North America on June 19, Citizen Vigilante garnered approximately $600,000 in revenue against its $2 million budget. Director Uwe Boll is hopeful for a sequel next year, despite the financial shortfall.
In Germany, Citizen Vigilante was unable to secure an age rating, effectively banning it from cinemas and retail outlets.
The film has only seven reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and lacks enough feedback for an official rating. Despite this, the reviews are predominantly negative, criticizing the movie as poorly executed and offensive, particularly in its portrayal of immigrants. While one critic acknowledges the film’s self-awareness, others label it as dangerously naive.
Director Uwe Boll has responded to the criticism by suggesting that the negative reactions stem from reviewers with conflicting political ideologies, claiming they are unwilling to confront the “political reality” portrayed in the film. Conversely, some right-wing commentators have commended Citizen Vigilante, which has been well-received by audiences, earning a 94% approval rating from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
