The 78th Cannes Film Festival continues into its sixth day, showcasing an eclectic mix of global film debuts, including Hlynur Pálmason’s The Love that Remains, Thierry Klifa’s The Richest Women in the World, Lav Diaz’s latest work Magellan, and Kawamura Genki’s Exit 8.
Wes Anderson is back for his fourth stint at the Croisette with the world premiere of The Phoenician Scheme, featuring an all-star cast including Benicio Del Toro, Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Scarlett Johansson, and more, taking place at the Palais des Festivals on May 18th.
Anderson was accompanied by several prominent cast members, including Michael Cera, Riz Ahmed, Benicio del Toro, Rupert Friend, Mia Threapleton, Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Antonia Desplat, and Bill Murray, who all made their appearance on the red carpet at the Grand Théâtre Lumière on Sunday, May 18.

Set in a universe of immense wealth and international espionage, Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme is a dark comedy about espionage. The narrative focuses on the strained relationship between Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro), a magnate in European arms and aviation, and his daughter, Sister Liesl (Mia Threapleton), who is unexpectedly named his sole heir. This key decision sets off a series of dangerous events, making them targets for various menacing figures including corporate magnates, international terrorists, and relentless hitmen, as Korda embarks on a new business venture.

This week’s notable world premieres have included Ari Aster’s Eddington, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Emma Stone; Die My Love, featuring Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence; New Wave, directed by Richard Linklater, with stars Guillaume Marbeck, Aubry Dullin, and Zoey Deutch; Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut The Chronology of Water; and director Dominik Moll’s Dossier 137 starring Léa Drucker.
Upcoming premieres at the festival include Eleanor The Great, starring June Squibb and Chiwetel Ejiofor; Sentimental Value from Joachim Trier, starring Renate Reinsve; Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest, with Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright and A$SAP Rocky; Alpha from Julia Ducournau; Carla Simone with Romeria, and Tarik Saleh with The Eagles of the Republic.

Over the next week, the jury, led by Juliette Binoche, will evaluate the 21 films in competition and award the Palme d’Or, Grand Prix, Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Actor. The winners will be announced at the closing ceremony on May 24, immediately followed by the screening of Momoko Sato’s Dandelion’s Odyssey.
