It appears Clint Eastwood might not be ready to retire just yet.
Despite speculation that Juror #2 (2024) would be his final film, and recent statements from his son, jazz musician Kyle Eastwood, suggesting that the famed actor and director had retired at the age of 95, Clint Eastwood has not personally confirmed any plans to step back from filmmaking. Kyle Eastwood shared at a concert in Amiens, France, “I cherish the memories of working with him. He’s retired now, and he’s 95.“
In a recent discussion with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley for the movie Lucky Strike, Clint’s other son, Scott Eastwood, provided some clarity on his brother’s remarks about their father’s retirement. Scott mentioned that he hadn’t directly heard any retirement confirmation from his father. He expressed deep admiration for his father’s career, emphasizing how it continues to motivate him. Here’s what he had to say:
“We’ll see. I haven’t heard any retirement news directly from him. His vast and diverse career is something I look up to and am inspired by. He’s not only acted but also engaged in producing, writing, composing, and directing. His extensive body of work is nothing short of incredible.”
Rod Lurie, the director of Lucky Strike, which stars Scott Eastwood alongside Colin Hanks, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Taylor John Smith, also lauded Clint Eastwood for his enduring career and his ability to remain active in the industry well into his senior years:
“What your father has accomplished is a testament to what we, as human beings, are capable of achieving at any age. Observing directors like Clint Eastwood, who continued their craft into their 80s, is incredibly inspiring. His work in Juror No. 6 is particularly remarkable, a true masterpiece from someone his age. He truly deserves a place on the Mount Rushmore of Hollywood.”
Clint Eastwood celebrated his 96th birthday on May 31. While Kyle’s comments seemed to announce his father’s retirement, Scott Eastwood has indicated that this might not be the case, or at least, it’s not yet confirmed by Clint himself.
Regardless of his official retirement status, Clint Eastwood’s legacy in Hollywood is unassailable. He first gained significant attention in the 1960s through Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy and later won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director with Unforgiven (1992) and Million Dollar Baby (2004). He was also nominated for Best Actor on several occasions.
Scott Eastwood, Clint’s son, has also carved out a successful acting career, appearing in many of his father’s films like Gran Torino (2008), Invictus (2009), and Trouble with the Curve (2012), as well as in other notable films including Texas Chainsaw (2013), The Longest Ride (2015), Suicide Squad (2016), and The Fate of the Furious (2017).
Over his illustrious career, Clint Eastwood has directed several acclaimed World War II films such as Where Eagles Dare (1968), Kelly’s Heroes (1970), and both Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima (2006), the latter of which featured Scott. Following his father’s footsteps, Scott Eastwood has also starred in several WWII films, including Flags of Our Fathers and Fury (2014).
Scott Eastwood’s latest WWII film, Lucky Strike, set during the Battle of the Bulge, is scheduled for release in theaters on June 26.
