The Return of Coyote vs. Acme
The iconic rivalry between Wile E. Coyote and the Acme Corporation, which originated in the late 1940s through the creative efforts of animator Chuck Jones and writer Michael Maltese, has been a staple of animated entertainment. The satire first appeared in a 1990 article in The New Yorker by Ian Frazier, narrating Wile E. Coyote’s legal battle against Acme for their hazardous products. The film rights were purchased by Scott Rudin Productions in 1998 but faced setbacks and were eventually relinquished in 2006. The tale has now been adapted into a film, premiering 36 years after the original article.
From Concept to Screen
In 2015, filmmaker James Gunn presented the idea for a live-action/animated film adaptation directly to Warner Bros. Despite initial delays and the project being temporarily shelved as a tax write-off, Ketchup Entertainment stepped in to bring Coyote vs. Acme to the big screen. The film saw a successful theatrical release and is set to be available for digital home viewing on September 29.
The plot of Coyote vs. Acme centers on Wile E. Coyote’s frustration with the malfunctioning products purchased from Acme. In a twist of fate, he hires a struggling lawyer to take on the giant corporation. The movie features performances by Will Forte, Lana Condor, John Cena, Eric Bauza, Martha Kelly, Jeff Bergman, and Luis Guzman, and has been met with critical acclaim. Currently, it boasts a critic rating of 96% and an audience score of 95%.
Critics have praised Coyote vs. Acme for its humor and emotional depth, describing it as a “gently hilarious, genuinely moving ode to our favorite underdog” and a “big-hearted crowd-pleaser.” Alex Harrison from ScreenRant noted, “The filmmakers clearly understand the appeal of Looney Tunes, and while the various characters are deployed in fun ways, Wile E. Coyote is the true star.”
The film’s unexpected comeback has led to impressive box office earnings of $54.8 million domestically, surpassing other Warner Bros. titles such as The End of Oak Street. With its upcoming digital release, more fans will have the opportunity to enjoy this inventive take on a classic animated feud.
Coyote vs. Acme is available for pre-order in UHD at $24.99, ahead of its broader digital release, allowing audiences to own a piece of this newly revived cinematic adventure.
Mark your calendars for September 29 to catch Coyote vs. Acme in the comfort of your own home.
