New Documentary on Thai Politician Pita Limjaroenrat in Development
An in-depth documentary is being created about Pita Limjaroenrat, the Thai reform leader whose rise to power was blocked despite his electoral win in Thailand’s 2023 general election. This project is a collaboration between American and Thai filmmakers.
The documentary, titled Lead The Way, will trace the journey of this influential Thai figure starting shortly after the 2023 elections, during which Thailand’s Senate declined to acknowledge his victory, to his emergence as a prominent global advocate for democratic values. The narrative aims to depict his personal fight as a microcosm of the larger global struggle for democracy.
Thai writer and director Prabda Yoon will produce the documentary, with production set to begin in 2025 and an expected release in the winter of 2026.
Joining Prabda in production are Su Ching Teh from Purple Tree Content, Daniel Pravit Fethke of Biology Productions in the USA, Jeab Indagena from Sweet East Productions, and Nicholas Simon, known for his work on The White Lotus. Kamolwan Panyasevanamit is also involved as a co-producer.
In May 2023, Pita and his Move Forward Party caused a major upset in Thai politics by winning the majority of seats in parliament, signaling a strong public support for extensive reforms.
However, Pita’s path to becoming the prime minister was obstructed by established powers. The unelected Senate did not approve his leadership, and the Constitutional Court later disbanded the Move Forward Party and banned Pita along with other leading members from politics for a decade.
This move, widely seen as a tactic to maintain the existing power structure, led to widespread protests from the millions who had supported his campaign for change. Despite these setbacks, Pita has become even more vocal and influential in international discussions on democracy and reform.
“The documentary will not only bring Pita Limjaroenrat’s political saga to a global audience but will also connect the dots to similar struggles worldwide,” Prabda commented, highlighting the film’s potential to inspire and foster hope for a more democratic future globally.
Filming is set to commence this year, taking place across several countries to capture Pita’s expanding influence on the international stage. The documentary is planned to be showcased in festivals in 2026, followed by a release on streaming platforms.
Since being banned from politics, Pita has stayed active as a traveling scholar, writer, and speaker, engaging with academic institutions like Harvard Kennedy School and various global forums that address the decline of democratic governance.
Pita expressed his thoughts on the documentary: “It’s both a privilege and a critical opportunity to have my story—and through it, Thailand’s democratic challenges—shared worldwide. This film will illustrate the broader implications of our fight for democracy and why it’s relevant globally.”
The producers describe the film as a compelling mix of personal and political narratives, showcasing Pita’s life as a single father against the backdrop of Thailand’s political tumult and the broader erosion of democratic standards around the world.
