Frodo's Epic Return: First Glimpse at Lord of the Rings' Hunt for Gollum Revealed!

The The Lord of the Rings series is poised to make a triumphant return to cinema screens.

It’s been almost ten years since audiences last journeyed through the cinematic world of The Lord of the Rings following the conclusion of The Hobbit trilogy. Excitingly, the saga is set to continue in 2027 with Andy Serkis not only returning to his role as Gollum but also directing this eagerly awaited film.

Currently in production, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum has released several new images courtesy of Warner Bros. These include a first glimpse of Frodo in the new adventure. Explore the complete gallery below, which features several cast members from the film:

In June, Elijah Wood discussed his return as Frodo, expressing excitement about reuniting with the original creative team. “It feels a bit like getting the band back together,” he said. “It’s like a family reunion. Although my role is quite small, I’m thrilled to return to New Zealand and reconnect with everyone.” The 2027 film will also feature Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Lee Pace as Thranduil.

While not all original cast members are returning for The Hunt for Gollum, Jamie Dornan will replace Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn. Joining the cast for the first time are Kate Winslet as Marigol and Anya Taylor-Joy as Seren, a Sindar Elf from the Woodland Realm. Leo Woodall is also set to appear as Halvard.

Peter Jackson, director of the original and prequel trilogies, serves as an executive producer on this project, which was written by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou. In May, Jackson revealed that The Hunt for Gollum draws inspiration from Warner Bros.’ Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix. “We’re focusing on exploring Gollum’s psychology while narratively inspired by the Joker’s film,” Jackson explained. “It involves delving into the appendices of Tolkien’s work and presenting it from Gollum’s internal viewpoint.”

As production on The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum progresses, further details about the storyline and new characters are anticipated to be revealed as the release date approaches. The film is scheduled to debut in theaters on December 17, 2027.
