Trading Urban Bustle for Island Serenity
Two years ago, I made the dramatic decision to leave the hectic pace of urban living for the peace and simplicity of a small island, home to less than 50 residents. Fast forward to today, with a new baby in tow, I am more resolved than ever to stay in this idyllic haven.
Embracing a New Way of Life
The transition from city to island life was profound. Gone were the days of traffic jams, crowded sidewalks, and the constant buzz of activity. Instead, I was greeted by the tranquil sounds of nature, open spaces, and a close-knit community that quickly felt like family.
The island, with its limited population, offered a sense of community and connection that large cities could not. Neighbors know each other by name, and every face is familiar. This intimacy, while initially overwhelming, soon became one of the most cherished aspects of my new life.

Adjusting to the Challenges
Life on the island isn’t without its challenges. The convenience of city services and amenities—a quick trip to the grocery store or a late-night dash to the pharmacy—is sorely missed. Here, everything requires planning and forethought. Supplies are less accessible, and we rely heavily on the mainland for many necessities, which means staying organized is crucial.
However, these challenges have taught me the value of simplicity and self-sufficiency. We grow much of our own food, and the whole community often comes together to share resources and help each other out. This collaborative spirit has not only made the practical aspects of living here easier but has also deepened my connection to my neighbors.
The Joys of Island Parenting
Raising a child in this environment is a unique experience. The safety and freedom that the island offers are incomparable. My child is able to explore his surroundings in a way that would have been impossible in the city. He is growing up with a profound appreciation for nature and a strong sense of belonging to a community.
Parenting here does mean that we are far from traditional support systems like family, pediatricians, and child care centers, which can be daunting. Yet, the support from the community is overwhelming. Everyone takes it upon themselves to look after each other’s children, offering a collective approach to child-rearing that has become invaluable.

Looking to the Future
As I reflect on the past two years, the benefits of island life continue to outweigh the inconveniences. The peaceful environment, tight-knit community, and natural beauty reaffirm my decision daily. With my growing family, I see a future here that is rich with potential and rooted in values I hold dear.
While the thought of ever leaving this paradise has crossed my mind, especially during challenging times, it’s clear that the positives far surpass the negatives. Here on the island, we have not only found a home but a lifestyle that resonates with our deepest desires for peace, community, and a meaningful connection to the environment.
As we look ahead, there are no plans to return to the bustling city life. The island has captured our hearts, and here we plan to stay, embracing each challenge and joy that comes with living in such a unique place.
