Nearly four decades since their last collaboration, Michael Keaton and Morgan Freeman are set to share the screen in a new Western film.
Back in 1988, Keaton and Freeman appeared together in the drama Clean and Sober, which centered on a real estate agent battling a substance-use disorder. In this film, Freeman played the role of Craig, a tough-love rehab counselor heading the program. After many years, these two acclaimed actors are teaming up once again.

According to an exclusive report by Deadline, Keaton and Freeman will reunite in the film Rode to Ruin, a Western thriller penned by R. Dean McCreary, with Keaton also serving as the director.
In Rode to Ruin, Keaton portrays a former Marshal named Henry Tillman, with Freeman playing Joseph Mulberry, an elderly criminal. The plot revolves around a U.S. Marshal who has spent four decades hunting his wife’s murderer, only to find his quest leading him to a fading outlaw with a failing memory.
Keaton shared with Deadline his reasons for choosing Rode to Ruin and working with Freeman again. He mentioned, “When I first read it, I thought, this is really good – and there’s more here for Morgan and me to mine together. Once we talked, it became clear we were on the same page. Just as The Shawshank Redemption isn’t simply a prison movie, Rode to Ruin isn’t simply a Western. It’s a story with a lot of layers that happens to unfold in the West.”
Lori McCreary, a producer from Revelations Entertainment alongside Keaton, Kelly Mendelsohn, and Gary Lucchesi, also spoke to Deadline about the film. She described Rode to Ruin as “a deeply human story about forgiveness, revenge, redemption, and the choices people make when time is running out.” She expressed enthusiasm about Keaton directing and acting alongside Freeman, suggesting the film could reach the potential they envisioned.
Although Keaton is not typically known for Westerns, Freeman has notable experience within the genre, having starred in the 1992 classic Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood, which is often celebrated as a high point for Western films.
While Rode to Ruin marks an important reunion, it is not Keaton’s first directorial endeavor. He has previously directed and starred in Knox Goes Away and The Merry Gentleman.
As of now, Rode to Ruin has not been scheduled for release.
