Gus Van Sant to Receive Prestigious Award at Venice Film Festival
Esteemed American director Gus Van Sant is set to be honored with the Campari Passion for Film Award at the upcoming Venice Film Festival.
The award presentation is scheduled for September 2nd in the Sala Grande, immediately preceding the premiere of Van Sant’s new movie Dead Man’s Wire, which will be shown outside the main competition.
Featuring a notable cast including Bill Skarsgård, Dacre Montgomery, Colman Domingo, Cary Elwes, Myha’la, and Al Pacino, Dead Man’s Wire explores a gripping narrative. The screenplay is penned by Austin Kolodney and the film is produced by Elevated.
The plot centers around Anthony G. “Tony” Kiritsis, a one-time real estate developer who, in 1977, famously took a mortgage banker hostage in an office building downtown. Kiritsis, feeling swindled, secured himself with a sawed-off shotgun attached to a “dead man’s switch” around his neck, demanding a $5 million settlement and immunity from legal consequences.
“Receiving the Passion for Film award is a true honor for me,” Van Sant expressed in a statement. “I extend my sincere thanks to Campari for this recognition—it holds significant importance to me. I am not only thankful for their acknowledgment of my efforts in filmmaking but also for their support of this grand celebration and showcase of global cinema. It is a privilege to be involved in this tradition, and I value the enthusiasm they have towards film.”
Comments from the Festival Director
Alberto Barbera, the head of the Venice Festival, praised Van Sant, highlighting him as a “distinctive filmmaker in today’s film industry, who maintains a deeply independent approach while still achieving widespread appeal with audiences.”
Barbera admired Van Sant’s versatility, stating, “His work navigates smoothly between mainstream Hollywood and the realms of art-house cinema, adhering to industry standards yet never confined by them, consistently true to an audacious and evolving personal style.” He added, “Van Sant’s films have significantly impacted popular culture, ranging from Drugstore Cowboy to My Own Private Idaho, and from Elephant to Milk, capturing and often foreseeing the concerns of various generations. Known for discovering talent, he has launched the careers of actors like River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves, Casey Affleck, Joaquin Phoenix, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon. His filmography skillfully alternates between minimalism and classic narrative, queer cinema and political discourse, seamlessly integrating elements of painting, photography, and music. Even forty years since his debut feature, Van Sant continues to be a dynamic creator, constantly capable of redefining his craft, as his latest film Dead Man’s Wire illustrates.”
The Venice Film Festival will take place from August 27 to September 6, showcasing a range of films from around the world.
