A former casting director from the James Bond series recently disclosed which actors rumored to be in contention for the role of 007 are not suitable for the part.
The search for the next actor to portray James Bond is ongoing, with the role open following Daniel Craig’s performance as the British secret agent in the last five films, from Casino Royale to No Time to Die. Since Craig’s exit, there has been constant online buzz about his potential successor.
In an interview with The Independent, Debbie McWilliams expressed that Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner, and Harris Dickson should not be considered to follow Craig in the upcoming James Bond movie.
“I don’t wish to see any of them as Bond because we now know too much about them,” she said. “We prefer to know as little as possible about their personal lives because that’s the nature of spies.”
Essentially, the actor playing Bond should mirror the character’s secretive nature, meaning the public should not be overly familiar with him, his personal details, or his off-screen activities.
McWilliams emphasized that maintaining James Bond as a “complete mystery” is crucial. If the actor is too well-known, it could prevent the audience from distinguishing the actor from the role, thus disrupting the viewing experience.
Furthermore, since Bond is characterized by his license to kill, it’s important for audiences to believe in the actor’s capability to embody this aspect convincingly.
“I don’t want any of them as James Bond. It’s critical that [Bond] remains a complete mystery. We need to know little about their personal lives because that’s what being a spy is about. It’s unnecessary to know mundane details like where he shops or his family background. And crucially, he’s licensed to kill, which we must believe he can do. If not, the illusion is broken for the audience.”
Reflecting on previous James Bond actors, McWilliams noted that both Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan were relatively unknown before their roles, and while Daniel Craig had appeared in independent films, he was not a mainstream star, which “helped significantly.”
“Timothy and Pierce were not very famous. Daniel had a background in indie films and a colorful love life, but he wasn’t widely recognized, which was a big advantage. I hope to see someone unexpected in the role.”
Looking forward, McWilliams hopes the next James Bond will be an unexpected choice and insists that the character should always be portrayed as a white male, as originally written by Ian Fleming.
“[James Bond should remain male because] “that’s how Ian Fleming wrote him. Why change that? They haven’t turned Harry Potter into Alice Potter or altered his ethnicity. It’s written that way and should stay that way, I believe.”
The James Bond film series, adapted from Fleming’s novels, started in 1962 with Sean Connery in Dr. No. McWilliams began her involvement with the franchise in 1981 with For Your Eyes Only. The 2021 film No Time to Die, Craig’s last, also marked her retirement.
Nina Gold has taken over as the casting director for the 26th James Bond film, which will be the first under Amazon MGM Studios. Denis Villeneuve is set as the director, with Steven Knight as the scriptwriter, and Amy Pascal and David Heyman as producers.
The formal search for Craig’s replacement started in May of this year, with potential candidates recently informed to be available for further auditions in August. Besides Elordi, Turner, and Dickson, other speculated candidates include Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Tom Francis, Jonathan Bailey, Damson Idris, and Tom Holland, among others.
