The renowned horror saga The Mummy is set for a thrilling resurgence, marked by the release of its initial trailer. Following the unsuccessful attempt by Tom Cruise to launch a new interconnected cinematic universe, efforts to revitalize the Mummy series were stagnant until Lee Cronin, the director behind Evil Dead Rise, was selected by Blumhouse and New Line Cinema in mid-2024 to write and direct a fresh, standalone reinterpretation.
With a year of low-profile development, the project gained momentum in early 2025, targeting an April 17 release. The casting process saw The Perfect Couple‘s Jack Reynor and The Wheel of Time‘s Laia Costa taking lead roles. The cast further expanded with the inclusion of Verónica Falcón, Moon Knight‘s May Calamawy, May Elghety, and Natalie Grace, with the production phase running from March to June.

Although the trailer is just over a minute long, it packs a significant amount of detail about what audiences can expect from the movie. Cronin, known for his focus on familial horror as seen in The Hole in the Ground and Evil Dead Rise, continues this theme with his latest film. Interestingly, this version of The Mummy appears to introduce a unique twist by centering around a childlike figure as the mummy.
In the trailer, we see the character Katie, played by the daughter of Reynor’s role, who disappears for eight years only to be discovered in an ancient sarcophagus, visibly altered. This discovery hints at an eerie transformation and possibly a horrific curse.
The official synopsis suggests Katie’s return triggers a “living nightmare” for her family, reminiscent of the curses in Evil Dead Rise involving ancient entities possessing characters. This could explain scenes in the trailer featuring self-inflicted injuries and characters being violently thrown by invisible forces.
Additionally, Cronin appears to be elevating the horror elements in this iteration of The Mummy, opting for a more graphic and visceral portrayal. Scenes of a mysterious figure peeling off their skin, Katie with blood emerging from her mouth, and other characters covered in blood suggest a bold approach to body horror that aims to deliver the most terrifying installment of the franchise yet.
