Exclusive Partnership Announcement
EXCLUSIVE: The French microdrama platform, Shorts, has announced a collaborative venture with Fumero Films based in Los Angeles, planning to produce 40 vertical video projects by the year 2026.
Leaders of Fumero Films, Adriana Santos and Alejandro Fumero, described this partnership as one of the most significant international commitments in the burgeoning field of microdrama to date.
Emerging European Microdrama Scene
Shorts stands out among a growing number of microdrama platforms in Europe, which are gaining popularity. According to Shorts executive Sylvain Daressy, the partnership with Fumero Films marks a significant milestone. Daressy praised the achievements of Alejandro and Adriana at Fumero Films and highlighted the combined strengths brought about through their collaboration.
Daressy noted, “Their meticulous approach, innovative creativity, and deep cultural insight enhance the vertical video format, making it appealing on a global scale. Working with a Latino-led studio of such high caliber sets a new international benchmark for short-form storytelling.”
Typically, microdrama episodes range from 60 to 90 seconds and explore intense, emotive themes across genres such as romance, science fiction, and thriller. Leading applications in this sector include ReelShorts, Dramabox, Goodshort, and Candyjar, with early origins traced back to China and Korea.
Over the past year, Shorts and Fumero have been fine-tuning their collaborative efforts on this project slate, which has enhanced their narrative pacing, production efficiency, and the emotional depth that characterizes contemporary microdramas.
Both parties are jointly investing in the production costs, which provides Fumero with a steady production workflow and Shorts with a fresh lineup of series. They plan to release episode previews through teasers and offer full series access for fees ranging between $15 and $50.
AJ Letterel, the Head Creative Producer at Shorts, commented on the partnership, saying, “Fumero Films exhibits a cinematic flair that is exceptionally rare in rapid production cycles. Their capacity to innovate under tight deadlines, combined with their emotional acuity and dedication to quality, makes them ideal partners. This collaboration on 40 projects is just the start of our joint potential.”
Cultural Diversity and Innovation
Santos and Fumero are proud to be pioneers as the first Latino-led studio to secure a vertical video agreement of this magnitude. They aim to highlight diverse voices and promote cross-cultural narratives, addressing a frequent critique of the medium’s lack of diversity.
Alejandro Fumero expressed their commitment to new-age storytelling, “Vertical films offer us a unique way to instantly and intimately connect with worldwide audiences. We are privileged to be at the forefront of shaping this novel medium, especially with a partner like Shorts who is equally committed to genuine, impactful storytelling.”
Adding to this, Santos emphasized the benefits of their diverse collaborative approach, “Our work with Shorts illustrates the powerful outcomes when different perspectives and strong creative visions unite. We are hopeful this initiative will open opportunities for more Latino talent in the realm of vertical cinema.”
Since its inception in China in 2020, the microdrama industry has rapidly grown to a value of over $10 billion. Analysts project that by 2030, the industry could be worth approximately $25 billion. This booming market has attracted the attention of numerous Hollywood and international executives, leading to the launch of various production ventures around these apps, and offering new opportunities for actors.
