James Gunn Shakes Up DCU: Batman Reboot to Include Robin, Major Changes Confirmed!

James Gunn Confirms "Things Have Changed" About The DCU's Batman Reboot Including Robin

The Brave and The Bold is receiving fresh updates from James Gunn as it progresses within the DC Universe. As part of the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters,” which has already featured a host of significant heroes and villains, the highly awaited live-action revival of Batman continues to draw attention.

With two live-action Batman adaptations in development concurrently, Gunn’s version will portray a more seasoned crime fighter who has already established his Bat-Family in this universe. Despite this, since its announcement in January 2023, the reboot has not yet begun filming and appears to be on hold for the foreseeable future.

In a recent discussion with IGN, James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, was questioned about the age range they are considering for the role of Bruce Wayne. Initially, it was declared that the movie would explore Bruce as a father, including the introduction of his son Damian Wayne. However, Gunn provided an update in his interview:

James Gunn: No, I think you have to wait to see the movie. Some things have changed. Plenty of things are in flux regarding his situation with his parentage and all that stuff, so I wouldn’t take any of it – Yeah, I mean, the actor who wants to… Listen, first of all, I can’t tell you the number of big actors that have told me they want to be Batman. I think you’d have a harder time finding actors who don’t want to be Batman. He’s the one character everyone wants to play. That’s the truth.

When IGN sought further clarification on whether Damian Wayne would still appear in the film, Gunn responded:

What the Latest on Gunn’s Batman Could Indicate

Since DC Studios adheres to a policy of not advancing projects until the script is finalized, it’s possible that plans to introduce Bruce’s biological son may be on hold. The production of The Brave and The Bold appears to be delayed, possibly due to difficulties in integrating Damian into the storyline.

Although it’s established that Batman is active in the current DCU timeline, at least one Robin has been hinted at in Creature Commandos, though it remains unclear whether this is Damian. The film may be shifting its focus to feature Bruce alongside another Robin, such as Tim Drake, who could be a fitting addition to the new narrative.

Regarding the casting for Batman, even though Bruce is already an established character in the franchise, the specific age range for this iteration of the hero has not yet been determined. This uncertainty might explain Gunn’s vague remarks about ongoing changes.

Our Perspective on James Gunn’s Batman Developments

Considering the numerous Batman portrayals in the past, it’s understandable that DC Studios is taking its time to craft a unique and refreshing narrative, especially within Gunn’s revamped universe. With The Batman universe also unfolding simultaneously, differentiating this new adaptation is even more imperative.

If Damian Wayne does not make an appearance in the initial film, there’s always potential for him to join the franchise later on. As we approach the latter part of 2025, it is hoped that more details about The Brave and The Bold will surface, clarifying the direction of the storyline.
