James Gunn’s Superman Soars Past Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man in Box Office Rankings: See the Chart!

James Gunn's Superman Box Office Overtakes Tobey Maguire's Last Spider-Man Solo Movie On This All Time Chart

The latest Superman film continues its ascent on the major box office charts. Directed and written by James Gunn, who took on roles as co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios after his work on 2021’s The Suicide Squad and the HBO Max spinoff Peacemaker, this film brings the beloved DC Comics superhero back to the cinematic forefront.

The 2025 release of Superman features David Corenswet as Superman himself, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult taking on the role of Lex Luthor. The movie premiered on July 11 and swiftly became the top-earning superhero film of the year, surpassing titles like Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts, and held its own against The Fantastic Four: First Steps which launched two weeks after.

According to Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Superman is expected to bring in a three-day total of $5.1 million in its sixth weekend at the domestic box office. Although this figure won’t allow it to re-enter the Top 5—having fallen from fourth to sixth place due to new releases Weapons and Freakier Friday—it will elevate its total domestic earnings to $340.7 million. This not only ranks it as the third film of 2025 to cross the $340 million mark domestically, trailing behind Lilo & Stitch and A Minecraft Movie, but also pushes its earnings past the $337.6 million grossed by 2007’s Spider-Man 3, making it the 26th highest-grossing superhero movie ever in the U.S.

Implications for Superman’s Legacy

The recent success of Superman not only puts it ahead of the Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man 3, but also positions it well for further ascension on the box office charts. It is very close to entering the Top 25 domestic superhero films, needing to surpass the $343.2 million made by Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022, which would require an additional $2.5 million.

Yet, reaching the Top 20 might pose a challenge. To achieve this, Superman would need to exceed the $381.6 million domestic gross of the 2023 animated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. This would necessitate an additional $40.9 million, a tough goal considering the film’s current revenue trends and its availability on VOD for purchase and rental.

Reflections on Superman’s Box Office Performance

Despite the unlikelihood of much higher climbs, the box office performance of Superman is undeniably impressive. It has already become the highest-grossing film featuring the Superman character, surpassing past portrayals by actors such as Christopher Reeve and Henry Cavill, and even outdoing the $330.4 million domestic total of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
