Sigurjón Sighvatsson to Be Honored at Locarno Film Festival

The Locarno Film Festival, taking place from August 5 through August 15 this year, will honor Sigurjón Sighvatsson with the prestigious Raimondo Rezzonico Award.

The award presentation is scheduled for August 6. During the festival, Sighvatsson will showcase two of his notable productions, the 1990 David Lynch film Wild at Heart and the 2006 work Zidane, A 21st Century Portrait by Philippe Parreno and Douglas Gordon.

Sighvatsson’s career spans several decades, during which he has produced more than 60 feature films and television series. His notable works include the iconic TV series Twin Peaks (1990-91) and Beverly Hills 90210 (1990-2000). He has collaborated with a range of celebrated filmmakers such as Nicolas Winding Refn and Jim Sheridan, as well as artists like Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno.

Giona A. Nazzaro, the Artistic Director of the Locarno Film Festival, commended Sighvatsson’s contributions to the film industry, noting his unique blend of European sensibilities with American industry practices.

Nazzaro praised Sighvatsson’s approach to production, which has supported and empowered filmmakers like David Lynch and Kathryn Bigelow to realize their artistic visions without compromise. He highlighted how Sighvatsson’s production philosophy during the 1990s significantly shaped cinema, promoting originality and independence.

According to Nazzaro, Sighvatsson’s bold and creative approach has made him a seminal figure for a generation of filmmakers, setting a standard for courage, integrity, and visionary leadership in film production.

Past recipients of the Raimondo Rezzonico Award include Abbout Productions, a leading independent production company from Beirut managed by Georges Schoucair and Myriam Sassine, as well as producer Marianne Slot.
