The UK recently saw the completion of filming for the science fiction thriller The Tenth Planet – The Red Sister, featuring two-time Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey.

The film is now being offered for sale at the ongoing American Film Market, indicating a further advancement in Spacey’s reintegration into the cinematic sphere.

Joining Spacey on screen are Ben Miles from The Crown, Joe Anderson known for The Last Front, and Antonia Campbell-Hughes of It Is in Us All fame. Rising stars Serrana Su-Ling Bliss and Lily Curley also play significant roles. The production team is robust, including Mark Foligno, known for his work on The King’s Speech and as a co-producer for Moon.

Plot and Setting

The narrative of The Tenth Planet – The Red Sister spans two distinct timelines. The plot description reveals: “12,800 years ago, a young girl named Anna is poised at the dawn of her fate as a mysterious red planet appears behind the moon. Ancient rituals and astronomical events initiate a cycle that reverberates into the future. In contemporary times, with humanity on the brink of disaster amid pandemics and social unrest, psychologist Dr. David Harper (played by Spacey) works urgently with 16-year-old Anna Collins, whose peculiar visions might be the key to saving humanity. As they are chased by the sinister forces from Planet X, led by the villainous Cullen (Miles), former MI-5 agent Greaves (Anderson) aids Harper in unraveling a tangled web of deceit, spiritual enlightenment, and interstellar danger.” A promotional image from the film has been released, offering a glimpse into its visual direction.

Directed by Matthew Philip Cannon and scripted by Greg Daniels, Gareth Pritchard, and Paul Gerstenberger, the movie was filmed across picturesque locations such as Snowdonia in Wales, and in Leicestershire and Birmingham, England. Produced by Foligno, Jo Stanhope, and Glen Kirby, with Michael Ryan serving as the executive producer, the production team is currently managing sales at AFM, with the search for a sales company ongoing.

Director Cannon characterizes the film as “a blend of age-old mythology and contemporary science, delving into the concept of enlightenment in a time filled with turmoil, loss, and rediscovery. It merges human drama with the enigma of the cosmos.”

Producer Mark Foligno commented on the film, stating, “This project merges grandeur, intellectual depth, and profound emotion. With Matt’s insightful direction and an outstanding cast, we aim to deliver a sophisticated sci-fi narrative that explores genuine human experiences, something that will resonate with audiences globally.”

While Spacey’s re-entry into the film industry is still tentative, his projects are slowly gaining prominence. His upcoming roles include the thriller The Awakening, featuring Alice Eve and Peter Stormare, and he has also recently directed the film Holiguards, acting alongside Dolph Lundgren, Brianna Hildebrand, Tyrese Gibson, and Eric Roberts.
